School News - Week Five

Kaurihohore School Week Five, Term One 2024

Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.

Respect - Empathy - Kindness

He aroha whakatō, he aroha ka puta mai

“If kindness is sown, then kindness is what you shall receive”

Kia ora e te whānau,

Wow, it is week five already!

We had a fabulous trip to the beach. We appreciate all of your support in making this day happen for our tamariki and especially thank Dianne Wyatt who pulls everything together.

Last week the senior classes held a STEM week.  Each teacher took responsibility for activities and provided wonderful, rich experiences for our children.  I am grateful to have such a dedicated team who want to give these opportunities to our ākonga.  There is so much rich learning that takes place in these weeks and so many connections to all other areas of learning.  The juniors also dabbled in their own class based activities, as relevant to their level.

Yesterday we hosted our zone swimming sports.  Cathy Hadfield did a remarkable job pulling this together and our children did our school proud, well done everyone!

Our bee group is also busy looking after our school hives once a week and very much enjoying this fabulous experience.  Thank you Michelle and Dianne for making this happen.

Our children also enjoyed their taste of tennis a few weeks back and the sports academy is now in full swing, enjoying great sporting experiences.

It always amazes me just how many opportunities in a range of areas our children are provided with. For a small school, our fabulous staff really do ensure they don’t miss out.

Restorative Practice/Responding To Behaviour

We often get asked how we ‘manage’ behaviour that is problematic in terms of negatively impacting on others or our environment.  You can find our procedures on our blog, or by clicking on the link below.  We operate through a lens of restorative practice and aim to have children own their behaviour, fix it and learn from it.  Our procedures focus on this philosophy and wherever possible we try to understand and respond appropriately in a way that promotes this.  It is important that children understand that their behaviour impacts others and that we need to restore this in some way in order to fix it.  Taking accountability helps everyone to learn from their actions, so they are not repeated.

Procedures for responding to behaviour

Pick up and Drop Off

As the timings are currently working well for pick up, we have decided to stay with this as a procedure, we are noticing it is helping the flow of traffic and getting the line clear, far quicker than it used to be.

This means, junior classes Room 1 - 5 will continue to come out to the courtyard at 2.50pm.  We ask that you only use the line between 2.50 and 3pm if you have children in Room 1 -5 (if you have children in both areas, come at the later indicated time.)  Room 6 - 9 will continue coming out to the courtyard at 2.55pm which is our normal bell time, we ask if you have children in this area of the school that you wait till 3pm - 3.10pm to join the line.  Usually by 3.05pm it is much easier to pull into the line and by 3.10pm it is largely clear, you are welcome to come at this time if it is easier for you.  All children must be picked up by 3.20pm.

If you need to pick up your children at an earlier time, you are welcome to park and come in and collect your children from 2.55pm.  When the front access to the school is clear, this process will be much easier.  We ask that those picking up intermediate children continue to wait till the later time of 3.15pm to find a car park, this is generally when the bus arrives.

When we have cars in the front of the line that are waiting for children from rooms 6-9 it causes hold ups, please pass this message on to anyone else that may pick your children up.  We have noticed this is improving and we thank you for your support.

Please note, if you are parking and coming in to pick up your child, you need to come in and get them, children will not be walking out of the gate unattended by an adult, please remind children that they need to wait for you.

Enrolments

We still have a few positions across the school for out of zone children in Year 5. If you know of anyone looking to enrol, ask them  to email Chelsea kaurienrolments@gmail.com and come for a look around.  If you know of any families who live in the zone, or may be moving into the zone, please encourage them to contact us as early as possible, so we can calculate them into our numbers.

Contacting Us

You can find all staff emails on our blog page under the tab  ‘our staff,’ however the best way to contact your child’s teacher is via seesaw message.  Teachers will endeavour to answer when they have  time during the day, however please don’t expect replies to messages or emails after 5pm.  We will respond the next day as soon as we can.  Please refrain from using Facebook messenger, or our personal phone numbers to contact us.

Fundraising Term One

All fundraising is currently covering the deficit budget we have set to cover staffing and learning support for our children.  Very sadly, the MOE does not provide the level of support that is needed for the high need that is out there, therefore it is something we endeavour to provide ourselves, to ensure success for everyone.

Our first fundraiser is the Easter raffle.  Tickets have been sent home and we ask that you endeavour to sell these.  Any raffles organised by Dianne are always worth winning.  Can you send donations towards this raffle, it can be chocolate, grocery items, art, toys anything really that people would love to win as part of a raffle.  Donations have been slow coming in, if you have not managed to donate anything yet, we would really appreciate it.   If you are unable to sell your tickets, please send these back to the office.  These need to all be back by the 22nd of April.

Bulb orders have been sent home this week, these make a great gift, there is no pressure to buy, but you may have whānau or friends that would like to order.  Forms need to be returned to the office by the 23rd of April.

Week Three News

Kaurihohore School Week Three, Term One 2024

Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.

Respect - Empathy - Kindness

He aroha whakatō, he aroha ka puta mai

“If kindness is sown, then kindness is what you shall receive”

Kia ora e te whānau,

Isn’t it amazing how time flies, it is already week three and it seems like we were never on holiday!

It is great to see our tamariki settled into school and classes humming away.

Thank you all for getting used to the new routines around drop off and pick up and for reading and adhering to the guidelines that we have set to make this process easier.

We look forward to a great day at the beach on Friday.

Pick up and Drop Off

It is great to see that this is working well.  Some points to remember:

  • Room 1-5 come out to the courtyard at 2.50pm.  If you have a child in Room 6 - 9, please don’t join the line until 3.00pm or after.  If we have cars at the front of the line, waiting for children in Rooms 6-9, this holds things up.  There may not seem like a lot of impact, but it certainly affects the flow of traffic at this time of day.  If you have children in both areas of the school, come at the later allotted time please.

  • If you park and walk in to get your child, please walk across the crossing and use the pedestrian gate.  Children need to wait for you to come across.

  • If you are picking up a child off the bus, please wait till 3.20pm to arrive, leaving car parks for those that need them.

  • If your child has sports practice, please delay arriving till 3.15pm at the earliest to allow those picking up their children to do so easily.

  • Do not walk across the car park.

  • It is really difficult for us to see your car, the fence makes it quite confusing for staff, so please don’t be offended if we repeatedly ask you who you are picking up.

  • Please encourage your child to watch for their car and if they see you, pop up straight away to wait at the gate.

  • Please pull up as far as you can and don’t stop outside the gate, children will walk to you.

  • While we have work going on, we ask that you don’t park in the front bus bay before 2.45pm, to allow any trailers or trucks to access this area.  This area needs to be kept clear as much as possible before 2.45pm and after 3.30pm.

  • If you need to pick up your child straight away because of other commitments, it is best to find a car park and come in and collect them.  There are generally car parks available to access.

  • Also another reminder to not block the driveway.  Please even if you are in the line, leave the entrance clear, so those needing to get through to park can do so.

  • Please pick your child by 3.20pm, if you are going to be later than this, we need to know.  It is not very fair to expect staff to wait until well after this to ensure your child is safe before they get on with the rest of their day.  If you are going to be routinely late, you need to start booking them into after school care.

If everyone follows the guidelines, it makes it easier for everyone.  I guess it comes back to the saying “what if everyone did that?”  If none of us followed the guidelines, it would be absolute chaos and prevent us from keeping you and your children safe.

Beach Trip - This Friday

Yesterday I sent out the guidelines for the beach.  I appreciate it is quite the novel, but please read and digest what these say.  These are all the things we need to put in place to ensure everyone has a safe and happy day.

The school has been going to the beach for 40+ years. From what I can understand, it has always been the same beach, but over that time our roll has grown substantially.

We continue this tradition, but with a larger roll, it is no mean feat.  The beach trip is a massive EOTC outing and carries with it Health and Safety requirements that we do not take lightly.   We all know that EOTC events, when it comes to schools, have been in the media over the past few years and this is something we do not carry easily as a staff.  We would hate to end such a fantastic tradition but it is getting harder every year.  To make it possible, we need your cooperation with the guidelines we set down.  It may seem that ‘you’ doing something different will have no impact, but what if everyone did that?

Children need to be on our roll for the day, this means we need to meet at school.  If they are not on our roll, they are technically under your supervision and absent from school.  This becomes a really grey area and might not seem like a big deal, but for Dianne, who is trying to keep track of everyone, it is a massive deal.

Children also benefit from being able to come to school and take someone else in their car, it is an important part of feeling like they are part of something.  Not only that, it also helps you to get to know other parents better.

Because we require more supervision than transport, it is also really beneficial to car pool as it cuts down on the car parks that we will need on the day.   If we have numerous cars, just taking one or two children, this makes it difficult for everyone to find a car park.

We ask that you help us to ensure our whole school can have a great day at the beach as a collective.  As a collective, we should intuitively know that our actions have a ripple effect and impact on others and care about the impact we have.

E hara taku toa

i te toa takitahi,

he toa takitini

My strength is not in the individual but in the collective.

Week One - School News

Kaurihohore School Week One, Term One 2024

Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.

Respect - Empathy - Kindness

He aroha whakatō, he aroha ka puta mai

“If kindness is sown, then kindness is what you shall receive”

Kia ora e te whānau, nau mai hoki mai, welcome back!

A big welcome to all of our new whānau, we look forward to getting to know you and your children this year.

We will always endeavour to do our best for you and your children, we look forward to working together with you in this partnership.

We look forward to another great year here at Kaurihohore.

Leslee Allen

Pick up and Drop Off

Please read the information sent home regarding drop off and pick up.  The new fence has changed the way we need to do things, and may slow things down, as our visibility is not great.  We will do our best as we get to know your cars.  What will really help is adhering to the times we have set out as guidelines.  2.50pm - 3.00pm for Room 1-5 and Room 6-9 3pm onwards.  If you have a child in the older class, please come at the later time indicated.  This should reduce pressure on the line and ease waiting times.

Whānau with intermediate children who get off the bus here at school, please wait till 3.15pm to arrive.  If you are here for a sports practice, please wait till 3.20pm.  Children are all supervised till this time.  If someone out of the ordinary is picking up your child, please phone and let us know.

When you drop off children, please park adjacent to the yellow lines, so children can walk safely up the pedestrian walkway.  Do not park parallel to another car.  If your child gets out of the right hand side, they need to walk behind your car, not in front.  Children can be dropped off from 7.45am, not earlier, they need to wait in the courtyard until the bell rings at 8am.

If your child is slow getting into the car at the end of the day, it may be easier to find a park and come in and collect them, this will avoid holding up the line.

If you think your child may not recognise the vehicle that is picking them up, or we might not know the adult by sight, it is possibly best to tell them to park and walk across the crossing to pick up.

When pulling up into the line, pull up as far as you can, don’t stop in front of the gate, this allows us to get more cars into the line and more children into cars.

Fencing The School

The fencing project has been instigated by the MOE in response to some of our youngest children struggling to stay on site.  It is expected to be completed by March.

Phones At School

Please note that children are not to bring phones to school.  If they need to contact you, they can come to the school office and phone you from there.  If for some reason they absolutely have to have their phone, they must leave it at the school office and pick it up after school.

New Toilets

You will notice that the old car park in front of the pool has been excavated.  A new toilet block is being built here and is expected to take about six months to complete.

Sponsorship

We are currently sitting down to work out our budget for 2024.  Unfortunately for us, 2024 and 2025 are going to see us relying very again very heavily on fundraising and sponsorship.  We've predicted this for the last five years with a massive group of Year 6 children leaving.  Schools are funded on their roll, and of course a massive group going out, means a drop in funding.  Technically we should be running eight classrooms next year, but we choose to operate nine, this is where the shortfall comes in.

We have set a target of $35 000 to raise through fundraising, which is a massive ask!

Currently our budget, even with this fundraising hoped for, is sitting at a $50 000 deficit, and that is being conservative.  We prioritise people over things and so direct the money we raise goes towards learning and wellbeing support inside and outside of classrooms and towards keeping our class rolls as small as possible.  If you know of a business that may be interested in sponsoring us in some way, please let them know to get in contact.

Easter Break

Please note that this year Easter is in term time, when this happens school is closed on Friday, Monday and Tuesday (29th-2nd April)

Beach Trip - 23rd February

On this day, the whole school travels to the beach.  A form will be coming home about this today that will give you more information.

For this trip to go ahead, it is absolutely crucial that we have the necessary supervision to do so.  While it can often seem that we have too many cars, it is needed.  We need people prepared to come to the beach and supervise a small group of children in and out of the water.  If you feel your child would struggle on this day, then we ask that you come along to supervise them yourselves.    It is a huge responsibility to take the whole school to the beach and we can not do it without your support.  Please return your forms ASAP.

Dates For 2024

School starts back on the 5th of February and the year will end on the 18th of December.  We do not yet have return dates for 2025 and will not set these dates till at least halfway through the year.  However you can find indicated dates set by the Ministry by googling, which are yet to be confirmed by the Minister.

Fundraising Term One

More information will come out about any fundraisers this year.  As you will know from my newsletters last year, we need to raise around $35 000 to cover curriculum costs this year.  This term we will have an Easter raffle and be selling bulbs, again, we will let you know more about these fundraisers in time.
