Week three already, time is flying by this term. Our children have already had some great opportunities to explore and develop their passions. Firstly, A HUGE congratulations to our two EPRO8 teams, who competed at Kamo Intermediate last week. The boys team managed to win the preliminary round and then went on to place 2nd Equal overall last night (5-8:30pm). A lot of practice went into this competition behind the scenes and thanks to all the students including the reserves who also did all the practice and only got to watch the competition. Great team work Kauri Kids! A big thanks to Cathy for making this possible.
Then an amazing day at the Northland Regional Chess Tournament at Kamo Intermediate for our chess team. Lots of learning, fun and heaps of successful players. We won the team event and therefore qualified as a team to play at the National championships. Thanks to Samuel for his work on this.
Along with this, children from our senior classes had the option of learning more about football. Groups of children from Year 4-6 had the opportunity to learn Football skills from Caleb from Northland Football. The kids who opted to join had an absolute ball! We look forward to another 3 super fun Fridays developing their skills. Lucky kids!
Lastly but certainly not least, all classes enjoyed taking part in workshops last week run by a visitor from the Hundertwasser Art Centre who came to teach us about the artist and his art. Thank you to Kelly for timetabling this and making it happen.
Certainly a lot of wonderful opportunities squeezed into a short amount of time. Our children are lucky to enjoy these experiences thanks to dedicated staff who take the time to organise them.
So while we do continue to experience a bit of a resurgence of COVID with a few whānau and staff down, we will continue to work hard to make our school a great place to be.

Updated Guidelines
These were sent home via seesaw, email and facebook. The most important things to note now are:
You are welcome on site.
You need to be masked if you come into classrooms or the office.
Office is open as normal now.
Please come in and collect your children and assist them over the crossing as we no longer have anyone manning the crossing. We do not want children running across the crossing unsupervised.
We will notify you if we have a surge of COVID in the school or in your child's class, otherwise please just keep following isolation procedures should someone in your family contract it. Please continue to notify us that you have COVID.
Coming Soon - Board of Trustees Elections
These are coming up later this year. A Board of Trustees is in charge of the governance of the school, looking at the big picture in terms of property, strategic goals and finance. Our board has always remained committed to retaining the special nature of our school while setting strategic targets that continue to drive this forward. Time commitment is two evening meetings a term and a job here and there relative to the position held. If interested in what this entails, you could talk to Emma Campbell, Richard Smales, Kasey Hindrup or David Pilkington and get more information.

Lost Property
This term, the lost property will be kept at school for two weeks. Each class will take a turn being responsible for this and will put it out each Friday morning for classes to look at. Anything not claimed will then be washed and sent to a charity or given to a needy family. If children’s clothes are named we will return these items to them.
This week and next the lost property is being looked after by Rūma Kiwi (8).
Fundraising
Thank you everyone for your support of Term One fundraisers, we made a great profit of $4963.63 (Still to raise - $21 036.37 towards curriculum.) This term we will again have a variety of fundraisers, sausage sizzles, pizza lunches and the disco amongst this. Wherever you can help out, we really appreciate it!
A HUGE THANKS to our volunteers over the weekend! Dianne Wyatt James Lucas Nathanael Mcdonald Nicky Robinson Ross Morgan (& Keeley) Janet Hammond Tannis Turnbull Arla Kerr (Chris) for giving up a few hours of your Saturday! We raised $600 for the school with plenty of supplies leftover to use at the upcoming disco! Lacey, we are super grateful to you for the time taken to organise this.

Keep an eye out as we will soon be using KINDO, making payments so much easier! This will mean we will be largely cashless…no more finding coins for the sausage sizzle!
Canopy
As you will have seen, our all weather canopy is up and running, our fundraising committee (PSG) raised a massive $35 000 to make this possible, we are very thankful for all the hard work they put in to make this possible. Our canopy is a real asset to our school and this area will be well used. Thanks to some very hard work fundraising it looks like we will have completed raising money for this project and can move on to the next big thing…the new turf!
Matariki - Memorial Garden
You may have noticed the area next to the native garden has been sprayed and roped off. We are planning a Matariki-Memorial garden for this area. It will form an extension to our native garden and eventually link to a junior sandpit. Crofts are donating the mulch, which will be added to the area and then all going well we will plant our next empty classroom day. This area will be planted as a way to mark Matariki, but will also be a memorial to the time during the first World War, that the school grounds, along with property from several surrounding farms, were requisitioned by the Army, which stationed the Maori Battalion and the 2nd Hauraki Regiment.

MATARIKI SCHOOL DISCO
It’s time to bust out the sparkles and dancing shoes! We can finally hold another disco….
*Friday 17th June 5-7pm, Hikurangi Rugby Club
*$5 per student paid in cash to Dianne please. *Tickets will be handed out the week of the disco.
Sausage sizzle, baking, ice blocks and drinks will be available to purchase.
Only current students sorry, we would’ve loved to include last year's year 6’s that missed out due to Covid but due to venue capacity we simply can’t facilitate this.
Also no siblings or friends from outside of the school are able to attend this event, just children currently attending.
Pilot Programme - Wellbeing
This programme will go ahead, thank you to all those people who got in touch, adding children to the list. This group is now full and we have started a waiting list should we get to run it again. Empty Classroom Day - Matariki Celebration
Our empty classroom day will be the 8th of July (last day of term.) Set the day aside if you can, come in, do some planting, check out our canopy, buy some food, play some games, we’d love to see as many of you as possible on this day! All whānau welcome.
We are also hoping to also have a hangi in celebration of Matariki…but will need lots of helpers and a few experts too. If you are able to help please contact Lena Newport or pop in and let the office know and we will pass this information on. This is likely to happen on the last day of term in conjunction with Empty Classroom day, but we will confirm this with you.
