Week Three News

Kaurihohore School Week Three, Term Two 2023

Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.

Respect - Empathy - Kindness

He aroha whakatō, he aroha ka puta mai

“If kindness is sown, then kindness is what you shall receive”

Kia ora e te whānau

Well, we are so lucky to have had such lovely weather lately…yeah right!   As a result our school grounds are really wet and muddy and we’ve had to put the grass out of bounds.  This does not usually happen till August.

Please make sure children have a change of clothes at school and the best footwear at the moment are gumboots.  We do allow children to play outside to some extent in the rain within reason (fresh air right now is important) but a rain jacket and a change of clothes are a must.

If you do not want your child to get wet and muddy, please spell this out to them as our children tend to LOVE getting wet and muddy.

This weather has not been great for anybody really, and children are already starting to fray at the edges…as I am sure are many adults.  We reiterate to our children it is ok to have big feelings, but it is not ok to hurt themselves or others.  We would appreciate it If you could also reiterate this to your child and help them with strategies to ‘regulate’ within these big emotions.

While we know big feelings are normal and that regulation within big feelings is hard, especially for our younger children, it is really hard for classroom teachers if several children are struggling to manage themselves.  Believe me, it isn’t just a little person problem!

Fortunately we have a play based philosophy that provides developmentally for children, the nest as a place of reprieve and support staff who take the time to build strong relationships along with a staff who are neuro-science informed and actively engage in social emotional teaching.

While we can not always stop behaviour that hurts others, we can respond to it in an appropriate way, however we do rely strongly on your support with this.

If we do ever invite you in to talk about your child’s behaviour and ask for support, please know, we do this because we care and we want all of our children to be successful and happy.  For some children this is a more difficult journey than for others, but regardless of their pathway, with time and support they will get there in their own space and time.

If you are ever concerned about your child, their development, wellbeing or behaviour, please make time to come in and see us, we will always do our best to help.  Your first port of call should be your child’s teacher, but Nicky Cleaver as SENCO and Tanya Gwyn as Learning Support Coordinator are also able to assist.

It is a case of understanding that big feelings happen, but also applying the ‘what if everyone did that’ logic.

If you are struggling with ‘explosive’ behaviour at home, we really recommend this book,

He ua ki te pō

He paewai ki te ao

Rain at night, eels at dawn (optimism)

Days off School

Children have had a lot of time off school due to disruptions, so please ensure that children are at school every day when they are well.  They miss out on so much when they are away and having lots of children away on any given day is really hard for teachers when delivering the curriculum.   If we have ongoing concerns around your child’s attendance we may seek support from truancy services.

Early to School

We know and acknowledge that many of our families need to get to work early, but please do not drop children before 7.45am at the absolute earliest and after 8am if possible.  Usually at 7.45am there may be only one staff member present in the junior end of the school.

However from time to time, we may not have anyone down at our junior end of the school.  If there are no lights on in any of our junior rooms DO NOT drop children as there is no one to supervise them at all.  Our duty of care around supervision does not actually start till 30 minutes before school and 15 minutes after school.

Fundraisers - Please support us if you can

We have around $20 000 left to raise this year.  This funding is used for resources and in turn then allows us to pay for staffing that keeps our class sizes small.  This means that every child is benefiting from the fundraising that we do.  Let’s not have our fundraising efforts be like the story of the little red hen, these efforts should not fall on the shoulders of just some of our community.  If everyone helps in even a small way, we can reach our fundraising goals a lot faster.

Please join our Kaurihohore Fundraising group on facebook, more hands make light work.

Calendars will now be happening next term as our paper order has not arrived as yet.

Pizza Lunch

We will be running this through KIndo again.  Orders will open on Monday the 15th and close on the Monday the 22nd of May.  No late orders will be accepted and orders can only be made through Kindo.

Colour Run

This has replaced the sponsored run that we have had the last few years.  This will be held on the 8th of June .If your child has not registered yet please go to schoolfunrun.co.nz and create a student profile page. Find our school Kaurihohore and then your child will be added to our fundraising team.  Every little bit counts towards our school total.

Children can take offline donations and still record this on their total raised.  More information has been shared by Michelle on our school facebook page.

If children do not want to be sprayed with colour, let us know and they will be given a vest to wear, so helpers know not to spray them.

Thank you again for your support!

Halloween Event

Again we will hold it on Halloween which is more fun for our tāmariki Tuesday 31st October.

If you would like to get involved and help make this night fun and a successful fundraiser for our tāmariki and School, then please join us through our facebook group Kaurihohore Fundraising, or watch out for notes on facebook.  This year we are combining market day with the Halloween event, if you are interested in making small crafts that can be sold, we would really appreciate that!

We will also be making jolly jars and would appreciate any donations of good sized, clean jars to fill with goodies.  We are after wrapped, halloween themed lollies, good quality toys that will fit in the jar, small halloween themed items that will go nicely in a jar.  You can bring any donations along to the office anytime now onwards.

Winter Sports Day Year 5 and 6

This is held on the 31st of May and it is an inter school event.  We are lucky enough to be able to use this as a fundraiser, running the BBQ on the day.  This allows us to fundraise outside of our community, but again we need help running this.  Please see Cathy or Dianne if you can help with this.

Matariki Dawn Ceremony

We have changed the date for this to bring us more in line with Matariki, it will now take place within the first two weeks of Term 3, we will advise you of the exact day as soon as we can.  On this day we aim to unveil the garden with the sunrise, we also intend to have breakfast at school and will be encouraging everyone to come.  On that day school will start slightly early and children will be involved in Matariki based activities.  We will confirm further details closer to the time.
