Kaurihohore School Week Five, Term Two 2026
Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua," Let our past guide our future
Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.
Respect - Empathy - Kindness
Kia ora e te whānau
Last week, many workplaces and schools celebrated Pink Shirt Day. While we absolutely support the intent behind this day, we want to ensure that anti-bullying efforts remain a focus all year round, rather than just a one-off event. No school is perfect, and mean behaviour or bullying can unfortunately happen anywhere. Children often see, hear, and learn from these negative interactions in the wider community, sometimes mistaking them for normal or expected behaviour.
As a school, we are deeply committed to addressing any behaviour that negatively impacts others, and we have a range of supportive strategies in place. Our full wellbeing procedures can be found here.
Addressing these behaviours effectively requires a strong partnership between school and home. Sometimes, when we raise a concern with whānau, the natural parental instinct is to protect the child by shifting focus to outside factors, the school or other children. While we fully understand that there are always multiple sides to a story, explaining away a child's actions can accidentally teach them that their behaviour is okay, preventing them from learning from the experience. When a child doesn't recognize their own role in a situation, the behaviour is more likely to become a habit. For real growth to happen, children need our help to understand and take ownership of their part in an incident.
If a teacher contacts you about your child’s behaviour, please know that we do so with care and for a valid reason. We ask that we approach these conversations with mutual respect, working together to help your child learn and grow.
Equally, please get in touch with your child’s teacher if your child is facing a challenge that needs our support. Open, honest, and respectful communication is the key to working through these difficulties together.
As always, I greatly appreciate everyone's support.

After School Care
The school has now taken over ownership of this programme. Please be patient with us as we find our feet, ultimately we want to ensure children have their afternoon tea, do some homework and get to take part in fun and engaging activities. Any enquires or if you would like an enrolment form either contact the office or email kaurikidsasc@gmail.com.
Creating a Neurodiversity-Affirming Network
This went home via email, seesaw and facebook yesterday, please get in touch if you would like to be part of this group.
Kia ora e te whānau,
We know many of our tamariki learn, think, and experience the world in different ways. As a school, we want to create a space where whānau can come together to learn, share, and ask questions about supporting neurodiverse learners — including ADHD, autism, anxiety, and other learning differences.
We also know that for many families, conversations about assessments or medication can feel confusing, worrying, or overwhelming. This evening is not about pushing any pathway or making decisions for you. Instead, it’s simply a chance to:
connect with other whānau
share experiences
ask questions
learn more about what support can look like
hear from teachers who work closely with neurodiverse tamariki
We would also love to welcome whānau who may have once been unsure or hesitant, but who have since seen positive changes for their tamaiti through support, assessment, or medication. Your experiences can offer reassurance and real‑life insight for others who are still navigating this journey.
This first gathering will be informal — a chance to see who is interested and what topics whānau would like to explore. If there is interest, we can invite specialists or guest speakers to future hui.
Everyone is welcome — whether you’re just beginning this journey, already navigating assessments, or simply wanting to understand more. The school can also offer the services of the After School Childcare, free for the hour.
If you are interested in attending, please reply directly and privately to Jo or Leslee via email. All responses will remain confidential.

Date: Week 7, Wednesday June 3rd
Time: 3:15pm
Location: Ruma Huia / Rm 7
Bike Track
At our school Board meeting last night we discussed our current property priorities. It was decided that the bike track will be an area we will pursue first to complete maintenance on and perhaps even add to. We will be seeking funding options to do this through grants or via donations/sponsorship. If you have ideas of how you could help you could email Joel Lauterbach kauribot4@gmail.com or touch base with Dianne in the office.
Cybersafety - Digital Agreements
When you enrol your child, you are asked to go over a cybersafety/device agreement. We have now decided to send this home each year for our children in year 4 up. We are hoping that reviewing digital safety practices each year will help children to embed some understanding that will help keep them safe as they progress through the schooling system. These agreements have been sent home, if they have not yet returned their agreement, they will be working device free.
Teachers Only Day - 8th June
This is being held on the 8th of June, with all of the curriculum and assessment changes we are currently experiencing, this day will give teachers the opportunity to further grow their understanding of the curriculum and the new reporting frameworks. School will be closed to children on this day.
Pick Up Line
If you have children in Rooms 6 - 9 please understand they come out at the end of the day later than the junior classrooms. We ask that instead of coming early and taking up space at the front of the line, that you come after 3pm, this will allow the line to start moving straight away as junior classes come out to the pick up line at 2.50pm.
Sponsored Colour Run
This event is always a highlight in our calendar. You can get your child registered by following this link. Every little bit raised will make a big difference and go directly to supporting all of our children at school.

Monday Market
King's Birthday, Monday Market is coming up in a couple of weeks time and I'm running the cafe on behalf of our school. Selling your yummy sweets and treats at the market is a great little fundraiser for our school so spread the word.
Also, let me know if you are keen to help out in the kitchen on the day too!
Ps- I'll send out a reminder the week before, and will look to collect your baking on Sunday or Monday morning.
Thanks!
