Week Four News

Kaurihohore School Week Four, Term Four  News 2022

Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.

Respect - Empathy - Kindness

He whakatauki. Ehara tāku toa i te toa takitahi. Engari, he toa takitini.

Success is not the work of one but the work of many.

Kia ora koutou,

This week we held our first board meeting for the new term.  A big welcome to our new board members and a welcome back to those carrying on.

Richard Smales - Board Chair

Holly Lucas - Secretary

Dave Pilkington - Treasurer

Bob Newport - Health and Safety

Arla Kerr - Elected member

Michelle Douglas and Chelsea Woods - Staff Representatives

We had a great first meeting, discussing the strategic plan which is current until 2024, budget, property priorities and the role of the board.

As we enter our next five year plan we will be prioritising a new toilet block for the juniors, an upgrade to the middle toilet block and an upgrade to Room 10.

We also discussed items that we are fundraising for, a big thank you to Bronwyn Bayne and Holly Lucas for creating a deliberate plan for grant applications.  Our next priority for grants are the turf, closely followed by the resurfacing of the lower court and the court outside Room 9 and 10.  Items like this are not covered by allocated Ministry of Education money, so must be deliberately fundraised for.

On that note it is great to be able to say we are only $1000 away from our $26 000 target for the year, thanks to a fantastic halloween event.  Any money raised over and above this amount will go directly towards fundraising for the turf.

A massive thank you to Emma Campbell, outgoing secretary of the board for coming along and managing the handover at our first meeting.  Emma has been a real treasure on the BOT, we thank her for her hard work and support and will miss her contribution.

The term is ticking by really quickly, hopefully we are able to run our sponsored run very soon and next week is year 2-6  athletics, keep your fingers crossed for fine weather.

Year One Positions 2023

We currently have three positions that have not been filled for Year one children who start school in 2023 before 29.05.

If you know of anyone with an out of zone child who turns five next year before this day, ask them to get in touch with us.

If you know of anyone in our zone, who may not have let us know their child will be starting at our school, please encourage them to let us know. We like to have this information 1-2 years out from a child starting so we can accurately predict numbers for our roll.

Bugs Bugs Bugs

We have plenty of lovely bugs going around school at the moment.  COVID has made a resurgence in some classes.  Please keep an eye out for any symptoms and test if in doubt.  If you test positive, you must stay at home, but family members may still go about their daily lives.  We are finding members of the family are testing positive around day 3-5 so it is best to be extra cautious around this time.    We also have a very nasty tummy bug going around.  This bug is highly infectious and it is ripping through classrooms.  Please keep children home for at least 24 hours once clear of any symptoms as they are still infectious during this time.

Gumboot Friday

Thank you for getting behind this effort. We raised $325 which will be directly donated to I Am Hope to ensure our youth can access free counselling.

Market Day - 25th of November

This will be held between 2pm and 4pm on the day.  Each class teacher has either selected to make something to sell, or to run a game on the day.  Market day is just a little bit of fun to end the year, it gives children an opportunity to bring a little bit of money to spend on items and to have some fun playing games.

We encourage you to come along and join in with your children, as there may be items you could also buy.  We will also be selling moosies and juicies on the day for $2 each.

As this goes to 4pm, we will not be assembling in the courtyard as usual, children will stay with us, under our supervision.  If you need to collect them at 3pm, please come in and get them.  If you have any ideas for games you would like to run, or would like to make anything to sell, please touch base with Dianne.

Raffle

We are currently running our Monster Xmas raffle with some fantastic prizes, at only $5 each they are a great deal with so many chances to win.

They sell quite easily to family, friends and work colleagues….pop them up on facebook…that is always a good way to sell!

It looks like this raffle will be contributing directly towards our new turf, so the more we raise, the quicker this new surface will be a reality!

The ticket butts need to be returned by the 30th of November and we ask that every family donates a non-perishable item towards the grocery hamper.

Thank you to Dianne for your amazing work with this!

Friends of Kaurihohore

This year you will know that we merged our Parent Support Group with our school fundraising to make one collective.  The aim here was to work together, spread the load and to have a range of people organise a range of different fundraisers.  These fundraisers have been planned out to appeal to different people at different times, for example, some will buy cookies, while others will be more interested in seeds.

Our target this year has been $26 000.  With every little fundraiser, every sausage sold, every raffle bought, every seed packet delivered, we have got closer to this goal.  Now we are sitting just $1000 short of this, and sure to get there!

This is a mammoth amount to raise, but it is the reality for us,  each and every year.
As we raise money for curriculum, we then allow the BOT to direct money to paying partially for a staff member, which then in turn keeps class sizes small.  As you can see, we are not just raising money, for money's sake, we are raising money so our children, all of our children can directly benefit!

Anything raised above this then goes towards our next capital items that are not funded by the Ministry.

This year the group has been small, but we have been grateful for everyone that has helped us.

Alongside this we also actively apply for grants that then help to buy items on our wishlist, that once again, directly benefit our children.

I wish to thank each and every single person that has helped this year and hope that in 2023 that this group grows, knowing that if we all contribute to the organisation of one fundraising initiative, it means it is not just falling to several people over the  year.  Collectively we can achieve great things for our school!

We appreciate any ideas for 2023 fundraising, or any offers of assistance to organise and run these initiatives, we say it over and over again, many hands, make light work.
