Kia ora whānau, welcome to week seven!
The weeks have slipped by so quickly, and it is hard to believe we only have three and a half weeks to go!
We’ve had a lot of sickness around the school, from tummy bugs and common colds to the flu. The last few weeks have been particularly challenging. It can be difficult when we have significant numbers of children away, but our teachers continue to do their very best to ensure classrooms remain busy, productive and positive places for learning. Please remember to have children back at school regularly once they are well enough to return.
We have a fantastic team of children competing in Cross Country at Barge Park today. Qualifying for this event is a big achievement, and we know they will all have given it their absolute best. We wish them all the very best! A huge thank you to Cathy for your work in organising this, we admire your flexibility.
We also have lots happening over the next few weeks, with the disco this Friday, Kauri’s Got Talent next Thursday, Empty Classroom Day the following Friday, and then Ag and Flower Day the Friday after that.
Lots to look forward to as we head towards the end of the term!

Supporting Positive Relationships
We would really encourage families to keep children off social media for as long as possible. We are finding that some very unkind behaviours are being encouraged through social media and messaging platforms, and unfortunately, these behaviours are often making their way into school. Along with this, behaviours that children are seeing modelled online, are becoming part of how our children ‘think’ it is appropriate to behave.
If your child uses Kids Messenger or similar apps, please take the time to check in with them about who they are talking to and what they are talking about. It can be helpful to have regular conversations about what is happening online and how their words and actions might make others feel. Please ensure they are not on platforms like tiktok or instagram, these platforms are completely inappropriate for children.
Some of the behaviours we are seeing amongst our older girls include:
Relational aggression: Using friendships or social groups to manipulate or hurt others.
Social exclusion: Deliberately leaving someone out of a group, game or conversation.
Indirect attacks: Spreading rumours, sharing secrets or talking about someone behind their back.
Passive-aggressive behaviour: Making unkind comments and passing them off as jokes, using backhanded compliments, or saying something hurtful and then suggesting it was meant kindly.
We absolutely do our best to support children with these behaviours at school, but we really need your help and support at home too.
One of the most important things we can teach our children is to stop and think about how someone else might be feeling. Encouraging them to step into someone else's shoes and see things from another person's perspective is a really important part of growing strong, kind and respectful relationships.
These skills take time to develop, and children will make mistakes along the way. What is important is that we help them recognise when their behaviour has hurt someone, understand the impact of their actions, and learn how to make things right. No one is perfect and we appreciate you helping your child to grow from their mistakes.
When we work together on this — at home and at school — we give our children the best chance of developing the empathy, kindness and relationship skills they need, both online and in the real world.
Nuerdiversity Network - 3rd of September 5.15pm In Room 7
Last term we started the idea of forming a group for whānau with children who are neurodiverse or who have questions around this for their child.
The aim of this group is to over time build a network of whānau who can support one another. At our meetings we will have a topic that we think may be of interest and then any sharing or questions.
We had to postpone our last meeting and will now meet on the 3rd of September at 5.15pm in Rm 7.
The topic of this meeting will be interoception, helping us to understand the things that may be going on for our children that we can not see. There will also be time for sharing as a group. We aim to keep these meetings short between 45 minutes to an hour.
Please get in contact if you would like to be added to the group. While we don’t have formal supervision, if you have no possible care for your children and they are old enough, bring them along with something to do and we will have another class open for them.
Kauri’s Got Talent - 1.00pm Thursday 10th
School Disco - 4th September (This Friday)
Get your tickets before Thursday. This is only for current school children, no preschoolers or older siblings. Adults do not need a ticket, but if you are staying, please lend a hand.
Empty Classroom Day
This will be held on the 11th of September, weather permitting. This is always a great day, children can bring what they like to school to self-direct their play all day. Teachers also set up activities on the day, if you would like to come along and set up an activity, take part in the play or even just do some gardening or build a hut on the day, you are most welcome to do so.
Ag and Flower Day
This will be held on the 18th of September. Entry forms for children that would like to bring a lamb or calf on the day were sent home this week. If you have any questions about this, please see Dianne.
More detailed information will be sent home via seesaw.
Awards Assembly
This will be held at 2.10pm on the last day of term. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Kaurihohore School - 150th Jubilee
Our school celebrates its 150th anniversary next year! We have set the 23rd of October as the date for this celebration and will provide more information as planning progresses. If you or anyone you know would like to help plan this event, please speak with Shelley. Please also help us spread the word to past families to save the date.
Golf Tournament Fundraiser
This year, we are planning a golf fundraiser as an alternative to our Halloween event. This will be an adults-only event and promises to be a lot of fun. Start organising your teams now, and we will release more information soon.
We are very grateful to Croft Poles & Timber for being the main sponsor for this event. We are also seeking hole sponsorships for $100; you can find out more by speaking to Dianne or Shelley.
