Week Four School News

Kaurihohore School Week Four, Term Three 2024

Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.

Respect - Empathy - Kindness

He aroha whakatō, he aroha ka puta mai

“If kindness is sown, then kindness is what you shall receive”

Kia ora e te whānau,

Welcome to week four It has been great to have some fine weather lately, even if it seems to rain at 3pm every day.  Unfortunately we still have quite a bit of illness floating around, please keep children home if they are sick, but make sure they are at school when they are well.  We have been very lucky to continue working with Karina Schreurs this year, thanks to funding from RTLB.  Karina is an expert in understanding child development, ensuring success for our neurodivergent children and helping us understand the role trauma plays in brain development.  Karina delivered a fantastic parent workshop yesterday that was very well received.  We aim to ensure those that missed this have another opportunity to attend in the near future, it really is worth it for all parents.   Karina helps us to understand how the brain works under stress and how we can assist children to cope in these situations.  Over the next few weeks I am going to share short videos with you on seesaw to help you understand the learning we have done into the brain and how we act under stress.  I hope these will be useful when you are assisting your child with their big feelings, or even for understanding your own reactions to situations.

As a school we are committed to building understanding and creating a community where everyone is accepted, valued and able to thrive.

You may have seen all of the announcements around maths recently.  Unfortunately the data announced was based on testing against a curriculum that has not been taught.  We acknowledge there needs to be progress in the achievement our NZ children have in maths and as a school have been working hard towards this.  We are lucky to have teachers who are always prepared to upskill maths in effective ways to cater for the diverse range of needs in their classrooms.  Sadly this move continues to ignore the crisis in learning support.  Without funds to support children with their learning outside of the classroom and funds to have adults on the ground to support our dysregulated children, no amount of curriculum change will work.  Resourcing needs to be prioritised to ensure every child has success and free up our teachers to teach.

I am also really excited to announce that our Colour run raised a whopping $7405.  What an amazing effort, we appreciate you greatly, this money will go directly to funding learning and behaviour support in the school!

Mural Unveiling

On the 28th of August at 9.05am we will be unveiling a very special mural.  This mural captures the meaning of our school name and gives a nod to our history.  At the unveiling we will explain the meaning behind the images.  This will be a short event and we will assemble outside of room 5 in the courtyard.  This also coincides with a visit from our ERO partner, we will use this as an opportunity to welcome her back to our school.

Pizza Day

Pizza day is this Thursday for those that have ordered.

Our next pizza day will be on the 19th of September.

Conduct On School Site

It is the policy of the Board of Trustees that all members of our community will act in a way that maintains the health and safety of students, other community members and staff.  Please understand that children hear how you speak and see how you act.  They are always watching you.  When on school grounds we ask that you speak in kind and respectful ways and show others consideration and patience.  We understand that everyone does have bad days, but it is unfair to then take this out on others.  As we say to our children, it is ok to feel angry, but it is not ok for this anger to then impact others.  We are a whānau, I am always impressed with how tight our school community is, let’s keep it that way.

We are role models for not only our children, but when on school site, all other children that we interact with.  Remember, we can not control the actions of others, but we can control how we respond.

School Photos

School photos will be taken on the 5th of September.  A form has gone home for orders, if you have misplaced this, you can collect another one from the office.

Fundraising Term Two

BARGE PARK - fundraising BBQ Wednesday 4th September

We have been asked to do a sausage sizzle stall at Barge Park for the interschool cross country. This is an amazing opportunity for us to fundraise from the community and not our own pockets! Dianne Wyatt will be going and If you would be able to help please let her know or comment on facebook.  We are desperate for helpers and your children do not need to be attending this senior primary/intermediate school event to help out.

School Disco

Friday the 30th of August at the Hikurangi clubrooms.  $8 per ticket, these are available through the office or via Kindo.

We are very grateful to PAK’nSAVE Whangārei for providing us with a $100 voucher, this will be very helpful and allow us to make the most of funds raised.  We are grateful for the support.

Out of Zone Applications - 2025

These will open on the 2nd of September, on the 12th of September we will be having an open afternoon for any whānau thinking of coming to our school.

Chelsea will be in touch with those on our waiting list, but you may know of others that might wish to apply.  We’d appreciate it if you could alert them to the timings around this.  Applications will close on the 15th of October.  We will advertise the number of places and what year levels have places very soon.

School Cross Country

This will be held on the 21st of August and details around timing are below.  Our children are great little runners (as proved by the sponsored colour run) but they may like to start doing some training at home too.

There will be a sausage sizzle on this day as well, sausages will be $2.50, please send money along with children to school.

Timings:

10+yrs - 9.15am- Senior Trophy - 147 Apotu (competitive distance)

9yrs - 9.40am- Middle Trophy - 133 Apotu (competitive distance)

8yrs and under -10am - Junior Trophy - 105 Apotu

*Please note this year our 9 year old race and our 10+ race will be divided into competitive and non-competitive.  This is a decision the children have been part of making, to ensure cross country is achievable for everyone. Please discuss this decision with your child before the event.

Please note children run in their year levels up to year 3.  Year 4 and above run according to ages.  If a year three child is very competitive and fits into the 8yr group, they may still go on to compete further, you will need to talk to Cathy Hadfield about this.

Year 0’s - 11.00 - 1 lap around bike track (birthdays after April 1st)
