Success is not the work of one but the work of many.

Kia ora koutou

It is great to be back.  The school is looking great after a busy Empty Classroom day. We are so grateful to Crofts and to the other caregivers who gave their time and energy to be with us on this day.

We are hopeful that the sickness that seemed to be taking over at the end of term has now passed us

by and that children will have a lovely, settled Term 3.

We welcome eight new children to our school this term.  We wish them and their whānau well in their learning journey with us and hope they love this place as much as we do.

Teachers Only Day

This term is full with a number of activities, some of the known dates are listed below.  You will notice that we have noted the last day of term as a teachers only day.  Each year schools are allotted two days that they can have a teacher only day to ensure teachers can engage in professional development that requires time and space together to do so.  We will be taking one of these days on the 1st of October.  On this day we will be working on our understanding of Structured Literacy and how we can continue

to work on and improve our practice at all year levels.  School will be closed to the children on this

day but all staff will be on site.

2022 - Return to School 2nd of February

2022 and Year 2 Places 2021

We are currently reviewing our roll for 2022.  If you know of anyone who may be sending their child to our school, but may not have let us know, we would really appreciate you giving them a nudge in the right direction.  A call to the office, or an email to me or Chrissie would be great just to help with planning.  This helps us know how many actual places we have on offer for 2022, at this stage there looks to be quite a few out of zone positions on offer for new entrants in 2022, however we like to be as accurate as possible.  We also have one place for in or out of zone Year 2 children for this year.  If you know of anyone looking to move their child and wanting to enrol with us, get them to make contact.  At this stage, this is solely for Year 2 children, we have no spaces for out of zone children at other year levels.

Real Time Reporting

At the end of last term you will have received your child’s report via seesaw.  If you were unable to open the full version of this, please ask your child's teacher for a printed copy.  As this is a cumulative report, Term One comments and levels were also included.

If you have not read this, please do so.  Putting a like on the report helps us to know you have read it.

Real time reporting means you can make an appointment at any stage with your child’s teacher to talk about anything you are concerned about or would like help with.  An email, phone call or seesaw message is the best way to set this up.  Of course if it is a quick question or concern, please just pop in and see us.  Checking on seesaw regularly is a good way to keep in touch with what is going on with your child’s class and learning.

Cross Country -  11th of August 2021

More detailed information on this day will be sent home very soon.  However below are the times we will be working towards, if you are wanting to come along and watch on the day.

Please note children run in their year levels up to year 3.  Year 4 and above run according to ages.  If a year three child is very competitive and fits into the 8yr group, they may still go on to compete further, you will need to talk to Cathy Hadfield about this.

Year 0’s - 10.15 - 1 lap around bike track (birthdays after May 1st)

Year 1’s - 10.25 - 1 lap around bike track

Year 2’s - 10.35 - 1 lap around school (go outside the school gate along roadside)

Year 3’s 10.40 (approximately 800m - go out of school grounds, run just past the top gate to the power pole, then return back and in through the top gate.)

8yrs and under - 11.30 - Junior Trophy - 105 Apotu

9yrs - 11.45 - Middle Trophy - 133 Apotu (competitive distance)

10+yrs - 12.10 - Senior Trophy - 147 Apotu (competitive distance)

Gala Sponsorship

The PSG are currently looking for monetary sponsors and goods sponsors for the gala. If you know of a business that would be able to sponsor goods or money we would really appreciate it. Please contact Janet Hammond for more information or let Dianne in the office know and she will pass this information on to her.  Sponsorship forms will be coming home with your child.

Recommended Reading

Our staff development in terms of working with children with challenges revolves around the work of Ross Greene.  He is the author of a few books which are recommended reading for all parents, but particularly parents who have children they would describe as challenging.

Those children that struggle to manage frustration, transition and problem solving and find it hard to self-calm and self manage their emotions.

His work is amazing and as a staff we are currently learning about his collaborative and proactive solutions.  The books below are worth a read.  I wish I had read them when my children were much younger.

Creatives in Schools Project

Parents: We would love your input over the next week!

Do you have resources (time, materials, expertise) to contribute to our Sensory Spaces project?

Project will take place (if we get funding) in the first half of 2022.

We are applying for funding to design 5 outdoor areas around Kaurihohore School that celebrate children’s senses. The design will create spaces for tamariki to explore their environment in fresh ways and encourage sensory experiences through unstructured play and structured scientific exploration.

We have brainstormed the below ideas, of which we would like children and their whanau to help refine down to 5 final ideas.

TOUCH

  1. Barefoot path (different textures as pavers)

  2. Texture Area with moss, feathers

  3. Clay faces on trees

  4. Ply Cutouts of characters in native bush areas (unicorns, dragons, native birds and insects) - need ply and someone to cut into the different shapes. Add textures

SMELL

  1. Wild Flower/Edible/Living Herb Garden - need gardeners and gardening equipment and perhaps brightly painted tyres

  2. Bulbs in pots dug into ground

  3. Maze

HEAR

  1. Sound Wall

  2. Bullrushes/Flax flowers painted

  3. Natural Hanging wind chimes/sculptures/Mobiles (need beads, shells, strong fishing wire, drills

INTERACT

  1. Book swap box

  2. Fruit and veg exchange box

  3. Fairy doors on trees

  4. Stones with positive affirmations/words/letters

  5. Whisper dishes

  6. Bird baths/ insulators for bird feeders

  7. Large Toadstool sculptures

  8. Face in Long Grass hill

  9. Knitting around trees

SEE

  1. Kiwi sculptures

  2. Succulent wall/word (e.g. ‘A R O H A’) - need help constructing wooden boxes in different shapes

  3. Dried ti tree wall / Bamboo wall

  4. Coloured shapes strung up between trees

We will be sending home via seesaw a link to a google survey with this information so you can pick your priorities and let us know of any other ideas or ways you can help.  If you could fill in this survey that would be great.

Food for thought...
