Kia ora koutou

The term is rushing by and it is week three already.  We have already had a busy start to the term and this will continue throughout the term.  Six of our staff are taking part in a Level 1 and 2 Te Reo course to grow our capacity in this area.  This involves Wednesday evenings, some Fridays and some weekends of learning.  We are loving it so far and looking forward to growing our own personal competence in this area.  Not only that, we are really looking forward to learning the cultural narratives of our place so we can build these into our place based curriculum.  We are hoping that we will form links and gain knowledge that will allow us more traction into establishing connections and finding our school whakapapa and curating this in various ways.

As well as this we are also hoping to work with a creative next year to develop our sensory spaces around the school. Thank you to everyone who took time to fill in the survey, we appreciate your input.  We will keep you up to date with how our application goes.

We would also like to welcome Terese Storey to our school, she is working as the third teacher in Rūma Piwakawaka.

Alterations to Pole Hut

A massive thank you to Alistair Simpson from Simpson Builders for giving up time in his weekend to do some modifications to our Pole Hut, this makes it safer for our children and has allowed us to open it up for play again.  A big thank you to Richard Smales for the time he gave up as well and to Reyburn and Bryant for sponsoring the money for materials, we are very grateful indeed.  Children are loving being able to use this pole hut again!

Teachers Only Day

This term is full with a number of activities, some of the known dates are listed below.  You will notice that we have noted the last day of term as a teachers only day.  Each year schools are allotted two days that they can have a teacher only day to ensure teachers can engage in professional development that requires time and space together to do so.  We will be taking one of these days on the 1st of October.  On this day we will be working on our understanding of Structured Literacy and how we can continue to work on and improve our practice at all year levels.  School will be closed to the children on this day but all staff will be on site.

Property Work

You will have noticed that we have work going on next to the old car park area.  We are building a small office that will be used by our Learning Support Coordinator and other staff.  This is funded by the Ministry as part of their Learning Support Coordinator budget.  We expect this work to be finished by the end of term.

Drop Off and Pick Up

Please be aware children are not to be dropped off at school prior to 7.45am in the morning and must be picked up by 3.20pm.  Please help us out by letting anyone that may be picking up or dropping off your children know this as well.  If children are here after 3.20pm they will be sent up to the After School Care area outside of the nest so that they are still supervised by an adult.

Technically the school is responsible for supervision of children from 8.30am and until 3.10pm...however we understand the pressure this would put on parents so are very flexible with this.  All we ask is that you take this into account when sticking to the times we do set out.

Sponsored Run

On the 24th of September we will be holding our sponsored run.  This was lots of fun last year and will be used to purchase decodable books that will allow classes that need them to have a set of their own.  We encourage children to dress up, to make the event as colourful and fabulous as possible.

Please encourage children to actively start gathering sponsorship now.

Outline of the Event

Children will eat morning tea early during class time.

11.25am all children will gather on court ready to start at 11.30am.

Classes will have staggered starts around the bike track.

Each child will carry a card to collect lap tally marks.

Children will collect a tally mark from their teacher after each completed lap.

At 12.30pm all students will return to their teacher and the teacher will record laps completed by each child.

At 12.30pm we will all gather on the court and spot prizes will be presented.

Children may run or walk.

Children and whanau may dress up if they want, anything goes.

Music will be playing for the hour of run/walk time.

Just for your information our bike track is 374.4m.

If you have not got on to getting sponsorship yet, please do so. Any amount would be greatly appreciated.  If you would also like to get sponsored and join in the event, please come in and get a form, the more the merrier.

If you have misplaced your sponsorship form we will have some available at the office for you.

Agricultural and Flower Day

This will be held on the first Friday back next term, 22nd of October.  If your child is wanting to bring an animal they can start looking around now, we will have goats, lambs or calves on the day.  You will need to come in and register with Dianne and she can give you more information.  On the day there will also be the normal ‘craft’ based activities that will be judged, we will send home information about this in the last week of this term and again in the first week back.

Gala Sponsorship

The PSG are currently looking for monetary sponsors and goods sponsors for the gala. If you know of a business that would be able to sponsor goods or money we would really appreciate it. Please contact Janet Hammond for more information or let Dianne in the office know and she will pass this information on to her.  Sponsorship forms have come home with your child and we need to know by the end of August so acknowledgements can be made accordingly.

Out Of Zone Enrolments

Applications will soon be open for Out of Zone applications for 2022 new entrants.  If you know of anyone in our zone, with a new entrant, who will be wanting to start in 2022 please tell them to get in touch with us asap.  The amount of in zone children we have, determines the amount of out of zone positions we can offer.

Cross Country

This went well today.  It was great to see the effort put in from everyone and we got very lucky with the weather.  Thanks to Cathy Hadfield for organising this.  Those that qualified in your year group races will then move on to an event at Denby and then onto Barge Park if they qualify.

Food for thought...

Noho ora mai - stay well, look after yourself and look out for others!
