We had a fantastic Ag and Flower day last Friday and got really lucky with the weather.  Days like this really are a team effort, there is so much effort that goes on behind the scenes.  

A massive thank you to Dianne Wyatt, who always goes above and beyond to make sure the animal side of things is organised and to ensure that all children feel successful on the day.  We are so lucky to have the wonderful assistance of judges Sam Moscrip and Bob, along with the very able help of Jill Moscrip.  This year we saw the largest amount of animal entries ever, if you are keen to have your child participate next year, but unsure what it involves, please talk to Dianne or Jill.  Looking after an animal in this way, certainly is a great learning experience.

Thank you also to the teachers for all of your extra efforts to ensure the crafts created were, as usual, next level and to Chrissie for ensuring the certificates were all ready to go!  

To our flower judges, Pat Parker, Anne McInnes, Judy Dempster and Jackie Storey  who gave up their valuable time to do such an important (and very difficult) job.  

We are so lucky to have such a dedicated, hard working team and a group of amazing volunteers.  Without the efforts of volunteers, who give up their own time (and work) for these occasions, they simply just would not be possible.

Another massive team effort coming up is our Halloween fundraiser.  To make this a success, we really need as much help as possible.  If you have not filled in the google doc to let us know what baking you are able to do, that would be much appreciated.  We are looking for around 60 pieces of baking from each class and then donations of wrapped lollies from those unable to bake.  The google doc was sent home via a seesaw message.   If you have not yet put yourself down to volunteer to help, please consider doing so.  I know that lots of help will be needed straight after school to set up, and again at pack up time, when we will all be tired and ready to go home.

You may wonder why all of this fundraising is so crucial.  Sadly the fact is, schools simply are not funded enough to provide resources and support for all children.  Money raised via fundraising directly pays for curriculum resources and even more importantly learning support for those children who need extra help (this includes teacher aide wages.)  

Learning support funding is not something provided by the Ministry of Education and so it is up to us to raise the funds we need to ensure all our children get help.  Using our fundraising for these purposes, allows us to direct some of the budget to pay for staffing which keeps our classes as small as possible.  Any way  that you look at it, every child is benefiting from fundraising, so it needs to be the work of many, not just a few.

A massive thank you to the small group who are pulling this massive event together!  You really are  legends, giving up so much of your time and energy and ultimately making a massive difference for the children of our kura.

I feel very lucky to be part of such a motivated and enthusiastic community who get behind our school!

Year 0 - 2 Athletics - This Friday (27th October)

This is a fun event for our Year 0- 2 children organised by our sports academy.  It will run from 1.30pm onwards.

You are welcome to come along and watch and it is likely this event will run until the end of the school day.

ATHLETICS DAY 2023 – Wednesday 8th November 

Year 3 - 6

Below is the expected schedule of the day.  

Year 3 - 6 Athletics

9.30 - Year 3 - 6 events will take place. This will run through until completed and is likely to be around lunchtime.   

You are more than welcome to come and watch, please wear a hat.

Children will need to come along in appropriate clothing to run and jump in.  They will also need their hat, sunscreen and water.  A sweatshirt is also suggested just in case the weather is cold.  

Events on this day will include shot put, high jump and sprints.

The emphasis of this day is for the children to have fun through competition.  We no longer have the space to include the discus, so children from Year 4 and above will have the opportunity to compete in this event at another time, if they wish.

If it is wet the event will be cancelled, a decision will be made by 8.30am.  

Our year 4-6 children are competing for our school Athletic trophies, which will be awarded at the end of this year.  Whangārei Inter school athletics is on Wednesday 29th November and some of the Year 5 & 6 children will possibly be selected, to represent our zone, on this day.

Raffle

Dianne is currently working hard to create a fabulous end of year raffle.  She’d appreciate any donations towards this raffle that she can add to the grocery hampers.

Life Education - $5 via Kindo, or as cash to the school office

The Life Education Caravan will be here from the 1st of November till the 10th of November. Life Education provides education to support our children’s health and wellbeing, delivered through interactive learning experiences in schools.

There is a cost for this and we ask that children pay $5 to help us cover this.  If you are unable to pay, children will not be excluded from attending.  We understand that times are tough.

You will be able to pay this on Kindo, or into the school office.

Gumboot Friday

This will be held on the 3rd of November.  On this day, children are encouraged to wear their gumboots to school and each class will hold a gumboot race out on the field.  Please send children along to school with a donation on the day.

Gumboot Friday helps the charity I Am Hope  to keep providing free and timely counselling for our young people in need.

8th of November - Year 3-6 Athletics (parents welcome, more info will come home closer to the time.) Please note the change of date due to Halloween the day before and the need to pack up.

1st - 10th of November - Life Education Visit 

3rd of November - Gumboot Friday

22nd of November - Empty Classroom Day

23rd of November - Class swap 9am-9.30 (children visit their class for 2024)

24th of November - Teacher only day

28th of November - Class swap 9am-9.30am (children to visit their class for 2024)

4th of December -  Class swap 11.30-12.30 (children visit their class for 2024)

7th of December - Junior Award Picnic 2pm Year 1-3

11th of December - Year 4-6 Senior prizegiving 1.30pm

15th of December - Last Day (12.00pm finish)

Food for thought…Rights and Responsibilities

He waka eke noa - a vehicle upon which everyone may embark.  

In society we all have rights, but we also have responsibilities, school is no different.   As part of our restorative practice processes we have adopted some rights and responsibilities posters that can be used for discussion when things don’t quite go the way children want them to.  I will share one a week for you to discuss at home with your children.
