End of Year and Start of Year Information

Thank you all for another great year.  I really appreciate the support that you, our community provide for our wonderful school.

Without you as a collective supporting our purpose and values the unique nature of our school would not resonate so strongly.

I am truly grateful to be able to lead such an incredible staff and belong to an amazing community.

Together we are making a difference for our children.

Tangata ako ana i te kāenga, te tūranga ki te marae, tau ana

A person nurtured in the community, contributes strongly to society.

End of Year Info -

Reports will be coming home via seesaw before the end of term.  Please leave a heart on your child's post even if you don't like it, so we know it has been read.

If you have a year six child, either download their journal or items that you would like to save, before you lose access next year.

Tomorrow is our Year 1-4 awards assembly, this will start at 2pm and be held under the canopy.  This will start promptly and should be all over by 2.30pm.  Everyone welcome, please bring a seat if you have one.

On Tuesday at 1.30pm we will hold the Year 5-6 Awards.  You are welcome to attend, bring a seat if you have one.  If you want your younger child to attend, please take them out of class, but be prepared to supervise them.  Room 6 and 10 children that are in year 4, will attend in the audience.  This should be finished by 2.15pm.

Both ceremonies are informal and an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our children.  If you would like a photo of the year six group together, there will be an opportunity at the end to get one.

Our last day is Wednesday the 14th and this ends at 12.00pm.  Wednesday is used as a day to have a bit of a clean up in classes and around the grounds.  Children need to be picked up by 12.15pm on this day.

------

Start of School Info -

All children now know their classes and lists have been sent home via seesaw.

School starts on the 1st of February and the last day of 2023 is the 15th of December.  Next year there will be a couple of MOE allowed teacher only days.  The first one we will be taking is on the 24th of April.  These days have been allocated by the MOE so schools can get to work learning about the curriculum refresh.

The date for the Beach Picnic has been set for Friday the 17th of February.  We will rely heavily on parent transport and supervison on this day, so set it aside if you can.

Statrionery lists have also gone home via seesaw, but can also be accessed online, by searching your child's class.

2023 Stationery

Classroom stationery is now available online at Office Max on this link https://www.myschool.co.nz/kaurihohore
or in store at Baigents Office Products 21- 23 commerce St Whangarei or online on this link
Both companies have your childs class list.
New Entrant Room Piwakawaka (RM1) is to be purchased at school if needed. If your child is staying in with Michelle she will let you know what they may need and this can be purchased at school.

Final 2022 News

Kaurihohore School Week Seven, Term Four News 2022

Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.

Respect - Empathy - Kindness

He whakatauki. Ehara tāku toa i te toa takitahi. Engari, he toa takitini.

Success is not the work of one but the work of many.

Kia ora koutou,

Welcome to the last school news of the year, with just two weeks to go before we finish.

Thank you for your support of Market day, we managed to raise $2000, which was a great profit for the day.  Next year we are likely to combine elements of this with our Halloween event rather than have two different events.

I am not sure of the exact totals of the Sponsored Run or the Raffle yet, but these have raised over $3000 each so far.

That means we have easily met our $26 000 target for the year and the remainder of the fundraising money will go directly towards our next major project, the turf.  Which we hope to have in place by the end of next year.  After that we will look at resurfacing the court areas.

Coming up  on the 9th of December at 2.00pm under the canopy is the Year 1-4 awards event.  At this we will award trophies for sporting events relevant to this age group and recognition certificates.  I know that teachers all struggle to make decisions about who gets these awards and hope that those children that do end up without one, understand that it in no way indicates their value.   You are welcome to come along to this event and may like to bring your own seat.  Year 5 and 6 will be present in the audience.

Then on the 13th at 1.30pm we will have our Senior prizegiving for year 5 and 6 students.  Again it is always such a hard decision when tagging names to certificates,  We cherish the significance of the award, but also want to celebrate every child’s value.    We really try to get the balance right throughout the year.  Again, please come along and bring your own chair.  Room 6, 9 and 10 will be in the audience.  If you would like your child’s younger sibling to attend, just get them from their classroom and keep them with you.

You may wonder why we have separated out these two events.  After last year, having the Year 6 awards at a different time, we realised it was a much more special way to celebrate them as outgoing students.  Having the events at different times also means they will be short and there won't be too much sitting around, like we have had in the past.  Doing it like this is easier in terms of organisation and means the younger children, who often struggle to sit through a longer event, don’t detract from the special nature of the awards for our senior children.  We understand that for some families this will mean coming along to both events and hope this does not cause you too much inconvenience.

Soon children will be meeting their new teacher for 2023.  We put a LOT of time and thought into classes, considering social and academic needs when placing children.  Teachers have already had conversations about the children in their classes and soon children will be meeting their class and their teacher.  This year, they will have three visits to help them with the transition.

If I don’t get to see you before the end of the year, please accept my gratitude for your ongoing support throughout the year.  We couldn’t do it without you.  Kaurihohore is a truly special place and I feel incredibly lucky to have spent my 15th year leading  a fabulous staff and to have spent my 19th year as part of the team.  Basically this place is in my blood!

Year One Positions 2023

We still have two year one out of zone places for children in 2023, if you know of anyone interested ask them to contact Chelsea.

2023 Organisation

Children start back on the 1st of February.  In 2023 our last day will be the 15th of December.

Class lists will be sent home via email (seesaw) soon, but children will find out soon.  Stationery lists will be sent home with children on class swap day and a digital copy will be shared online.  Class teachers will be posting the last instalment of your child’s report on seesaw before the last day, so look out for it.

Raffle

Ticket butts should now be back at the office, thank you for your support.

Last Day

Our last day is the 14th of December, please note we finish at 12pm and children need to be picked up by 12.15pm at the latest.

Reporting

After trialling real time reporting for a couple of years and with COVID causing a bit of disruption to this process over the last few years, we have decided to make a few changes, based on feedback and staff discussion.

Instead of four dispositional comments on reports, you will now get two, one in Term Two and one in Term four.  Reporting comments will also go on seesaw twice a year for reading, writing and maths.  We will be reinstating learning conferences (parent interviews) early in Term Three.  You are still encouraged to come into classes and chat with teachers or to make time to meet when you have questions or concerns.

If you have a year 6 child, you should now start to download what you want from their journal, if you want items printed out, but can’t do this yourself, check with your child’s teacher as they may be able to help (within reason.)  You can download your child’s entire journal.

Attendance

So many of our children have been hit with sickness this year.  This has made it really difficult when it comes to them having regular attendance.  We hope that next year will be better.  Please remember, when children are not sick, they need to be at school.  Staff have been reviewing progress recently and one of the biggest factors that determines progress is attendance, being at school regularly, makes a massive difference.

Drop off and Pick Ups

Again, a reminder, please don’t drop children before 7.45am at the earliest and pick them up by 3.20pm at the very latest.

Week Four News

Kaurihohore School Week Four, Term Four  News 2022

Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.

Respect - Empathy - Kindness

He whakatauki. Ehara tāku toa i te toa takitahi. Engari, he toa takitini.

Success is not the work of one but the work of many.

Kia ora koutou,

This week we held our first board meeting for the new term.  A big welcome to our new board members and a welcome back to those carrying on.

Richard Smales - Board Chair

Holly Lucas - Secretary

Dave Pilkington - Treasurer

Bob Newport - Health and Safety

Arla Kerr - Elected member

Michelle Douglas and Chelsea Woods - Staff Representatives

We had a great first meeting, discussing the strategic plan which is current until 2024, budget, property priorities and the role of the board.

As we enter our next five year plan we will be prioritising a new toilet block for the juniors, an upgrade to the middle toilet block and an upgrade to Room 10.

We also discussed items that we are fundraising for, a big thank you to Bronwyn Bayne and Holly Lucas for creating a deliberate plan for grant applications.  Our next priority for grants are the turf, closely followed by the resurfacing of the lower court and the court outside Room 9 and 10.  Items like this are not covered by allocated Ministry of Education money, so must be deliberately fundraised for.

On that note it is great to be able to say we are only $1000 away from our $26 000 target for the year, thanks to a fantastic halloween event.  Any money raised over and above this amount will go directly towards fundraising for the turf.

A massive thank you to Emma Campbell, outgoing secretary of the board for coming along and managing the handover at our first meeting.  Emma has been a real treasure on the BOT, we thank her for her hard work and support and will miss her contribution.

The term is ticking by really quickly, hopefully we are able to run our sponsored run very soon and next week is year 2-6  athletics, keep your fingers crossed for fine weather.

Year One Positions 2023

We currently have three positions that have not been filled for Year one children who start school in 2023 before 29.05.

If you know of anyone with an out of zone child who turns five next year before this day, ask them to get in touch with us.

If you know of anyone in our zone, who may not have let us know their child will be starting at our school, please encourage them to let us know. We like to have this information 1-2 years out from a child starting so we can accurately predict numbers for our roll.

Bugs Bugs Bugs

We have plenty of lovely bugs going around school at the moment.  COVID has made a resurgence in some classes.  Please keep an eye out for any symptoms and test if in doubt.  If you test positive, you must stay at home, but family members may still go about their daily lives.  We are finding members of the family are testing positive around day 3-5 so it is best to be extra cautious around this time.    We also have a very nasty tummy bug going around.  This bug is highly infectious and it is ripping through classrooms.  Please keep children home for at least 24 hours once clear of any symptoms as they are still infectious during this time.

Gumboot Friday

Thank you for getting behind this effort. We raised $325 which will be directly donated to I Am Hope to ensure our youth can access free counselling.

Market Day - 25th of November

This will be held between 2pm and 4pm on the day.  Each class teacher has either selected to make something to sell, or to run a game on the day.  Market day is just a little bit of fun to end the year, it gives children an opportunity to bring a little bit of money to spend on items and to have some fun playing games.

We encourage you to come along and join in with your children, as there may be items you could also buy.  We will also be selling moosies and juicies on the day for $2 each.

As this goes to 4pm, we will not be assembling in the courtyard as usual, children will stay with us, under our supervision.  If you need to collect them at 3pm, please come in and get them.  If you have any ideas for games you would like to run, or would like to make anything to sell, please touch base with Dianne.

Raffle

We are currently running our Monster Xmas raffle with some fantastic prizes, at only $5 each they are a great deal with so many chances to win.

They sell quite easily to family, friends and work colleagues….pop them up on facebook…that is always a good way to sell!

It looks like this raffle will be contributing directly towards our new turf, so the more we raise, the quicker this new surface will be a reality!

The ticket butts need to be returned by the 30th of November and we ask that every family donates a non-perishable item towards the grocery hamper.

Thank you to Dianne for your amazing work with this!

Friends of Kaurihohore

This year you will know that we merged our Parent Support Group with our school fundraising to make one collective.  The aim here was to work together, spread the load and to have a range of people organise a range of different fundraisers.  These fundraisers have been planned out to appeal to different people at different times, for example, some will buy cookies, while others will be more interested in seeds.

Our target this year has been $26 000.  With every little fundraiser, every sausage sold, every raffle bought, every seed packet delivered, we have got closer to this goal.  Now we are sitting just $1000 short of this, and sure to get there!

This is a mammoth amount to raise, but it is the reality for us,  each and every year.
As we raise money for curriculum, we then allow the BOT to direct money to paying partially for a staff member, which then in turn keeps class sizes small.  As you can see, we are not just raising money, for money's sake, we are raising money so our children, all of our children can directly benefit!

Anything raised above this then goes towards our next capital items that are not funded by the Ministry.

This year the group has been small, but we have been grateful for everyone that has helped us.

Alongside this we also actively apply for grants that then help to buy items on our wishlist, that once again, directly benefit our children.

I wish to thank each and every single person that has helped this year and hope that in 2023 that this group grows, knowing that if we all contribute to the organisation of one fundraising initiative, it means it is not just falling to several people over the  year.  Collectively we can achieve great things for our school!

We appreciate any ideas for 2023 fundraising, or any offers of assistance to organise and run these initiatives, we say it over and over again, many hands, make light work.

All orders need to be in by Friday, if you have lost your form, please come to the office to collect another one.

He whakatauki. Ehara tāku toa i te toa takitahi. Engari, he toa takitini.

Success is not the work of one but the work of many.

Kia ora koutou,

It is great to be back!  Term four promises as always to be super busy, the weeks will fly by, as they always do.

Please remember children need a sunhat (not a cap) to wear each day if they want to play in the sun.  They also need to start bringing their togs, check with your child’s teacher on their swimming days.  A massive thank you to Paul Allen for all the extra unpaid hours he has put into getting the pool ready and thank you to those that have volunteered to be on our pool roster, we couldn’t operate the pool without you.

Hopefully you have had a chance to read the latest instalment of your child’s report.  As this report is cumulative, by the end of the year, you will have a lovely reflection of their year as a learner.  In term four, we will update academic levels, but if you have questions, or would like to know how to help, please make time to sit down with your child’s teacher.  We are only too happy to meet with you and discuss your child and their specific needs.

Here’s to a fantastic term!

Junior Sandpit

We are currently planning a sandpit area that will be connected to our native garden.  The Mountain Lions have very kindly offered their support to get this in place.  However we need a bit of a design.  Landscaping and design is not my forte, so Paul Allen would love someone's help to plot out what the design for this area may look like.   This would just be conceptual, drawing out what it would look like and measuring it out.  We need to get on to this urgently, so if you feel you could work with Paul on this, please email paul421allen@gmail.com

Drop off/Pick Up

Please do not drop off children before 7.45am and make sure they are picked up by 3.15pm in the afternoon 3.20pm at the latest.

Avos to Go School Fundraiser For Books

Orders are now open till the 23rd of October.

Gumboot Friday - Friday 4th of November

We are encouraging children to get their gumboots on and bring a donation along on the 4th, to support Gumboot Friday. 100% of the money raised goes towards paying for counselling for kiwi kids and young people, this is a very worthy cause, so gumboot up!

If children do not have gumboots, they may like to wear fancy socks, or something else that makes a bold statement.

Fundraisers - Sponsored Run - Coming Very Soon!

Please make sure children are gathering sponsorship, this event is a lot of fun, we would love to see you dress up and join in!

This year our 'Sponsored Run' will take place on Tuesday 8th November, children can dress up for this event, but keep in mind, they will get quite warm.

Sponsorship forms will get sent home with the tamariki today. Any amount would be greatly appreciated!

We are aiming to raise around $3000 from this fundraiser, so please get behind us and encourage children to seek sponsorship on this day.   This fundraising will go towards the

$12 000 we still need to raise for the curriculum, so we are hoping to make a massive dent in this big number!

Calendar Art

A massive thank you for getting behind this fundraiser, we managed to raise $2450…we will let you know when they have arrived for pick up.  Thank you Yvette for your work sorting this.

Halloween Fundraiser

This is now sold out!  That is 400 people that we need to cater for.  Thank you so much to those that have offered help, if you are able to help, but have not volunteered, please let us know.

To make maximum profit, we need every family to assist us with baking.   A message about this has been out on seesaw and facebook.  Please leave baking in the breakfast room Monday morning (31st Oct) so we can gauge exactly what we have and assess whether we need more in plenty of time before our gates open. Thank you so much!

A massive thank you to Kim for taking the lead on this and to our small committee for being brave enough to take a fundraiser like this on!

Life Education Caravan

The children loved this experience as usual and your fabulous donations helped us to cover the full cost of the visit…$800.  I am so grateful to you all!
