Week Seven School News

Kaurihohore School Week Seven, Term Three 2023

Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.

Respect - Empathy - Kindness

He aroha whakatō, he aroha ka puta mai

“If kindness is sown, then kindness is what you shall receive”

Kia ora e te whānau,

Wow, our children are being hit hard with illness, as are our staff.  Many classes have had half of the roll away with the flu or the tummy bug over the last few weeks.  We hope that this all passes us by very soon!

Last week we had our open afternoon for families thinking of coming to our kura.  Thank you to Mia, Jackson, Myles, Brennan, Ivy, Dannii, Addison and Antonin for the leadership they displayed in showing our visitors around, you were awesome!

We are currently advertising our out of zone positions for 2024, this are the positions we have advertised for 2024

The Board of Trustees of Kaurihohore School has determined that:

13 - Y1 Out of zone places priority  2-6

7 - Y0 Out of zone places priority  2-6

5 - Y2 Out of zone places, priority 2-6

4 - Y5 Out of zone places, priority 2-4

2 - Y6 Out of zone places, priority 2

Applications close on the 11th of October.

If you have a child who will start next year and are out of our zone, you still need to apply for a position.

If you know of families who have moved into our area, please let them know to get in touch with us. We like to know how many children we have coming to our school over the next few years, so we can carefully calculate our numbers.

We take the numbers of siblings expected into account when advertising, but we still need your form to ensure they can gain a position, we would hate our current families to miss out on out of zone places.

You can contact Chelsea for any enquiries kaurienrolments@gmail.com

Thank you all for your support.

Big Achievements

As we don’t have regular assemblies, we have decided to use the noticeboard outside the office to acknowledge big achievements.  If your child has a major success, we would love you to send along a photo and blurb that we can put on display.

Contacting Us

You can find all staff emails on our blog page under the tab  ‘our staff,’ however the best way to contact your child’s teacher is via seesaw message.  Teachers will endeavour to answer when they have  time during the day, however please don’t expect replies to messages or emails after 5pm.  We will respond the next day as soon as we can.  Please refrain from using Facebook messenger to contact us.

Our school blog is kaurihohoreschool.blogspot.com

Office emails are:

Chrissie - admin@kaurihohoreschool.co.nz

Dianne - reception@kaurihohoreschool.co.nz

Chelsea/Enrolments - kaurienrolments@gmail.com

Leslee - principal@kaurihohoreschool.co.nz

Reporting Absence - kauriabsences@gmail.com

Please Update Personal Details:

If you have had a change of address, change in emergency contacts, change of phone number or a change in your child’s medical details, please come into the office and update your details.   We have had a few instances recently where we have not been able to contact caregivers when a child has not been picked up from school.  This is an incredibly stressful situation to be put in at the end of the day.

2024 Dates -

Children Start Back on the 5th of February and the school year will end on the 18th of December.

Disco - This Friday

Tickets are on sale via Kindo, until midnight tonight, don’t miss out if you have not already got yours.  Children can be dropped off and will be supervised, they need to be picked up promptly at the conclusion of the disco.

If you are coming along, please understand that we ask only one adult per child as the area is not big enough for too many adults.  If you are coming along, please help out.

We request that no other children from outside of our school attend please, this includes siblings.

Donations of baking are still being requested, please visit our facebook page and put yourself down if you are able to help with this.

Remember, this is a parent run fundraiser, these events should not fall on the shoulders of a few as they benefit all.

There will be some food available on the night, so please send a small amount of money with your child.

Keeping Our Kids Safe Online

We are becoming increasingly concerned about the time our children are spending unsupervised online.  Children are frequently telling us they are tired because they are staying up late ‘gaming’ or waking in the early hours to use their device.  They are talking about playing games with R18 ratings and about the fact they are ‘chatting’ to people online.

We are noticing a massive change in the children coming into school, because many have had so much time on devices, they have no idea how to play and get bored easily, it is also impacting their oral language and vocab development.  Social skills are also being impacted, children are less able to make friends and find it really hard to get on with others.

Children appear to be using devices to calm down and to entertain and they are much more easily frustrated and have heightened anxiety.  We are, to put it simply, worried.

This is a fabulous opportunity to go along to a free event and listen to someone talk about keeping our children safe online.

The Tai Tokerau South RTLB Cluster 2 is bringing Rob Cope- Author, Parent & Filmmaker of 2020 documentary: 'Our Kids Online'- to Whangārei to present to Parents & Teachers across our cluster on Cyber Safety.

Where: Whangārei Boys’ High School Auditorium, Whangārei Boys High School, 245 Western Hills Drive, Whangārei.

When: Monday 9th October, 4.00 pm- 6.00 pm.

Cost: FREE

Adult only event

Rob's talk will cover

  • Cyberbullying - How cyberbullies can reach our kids 24/7

  • Social media - The pressure for kids to build an online brand that is often far removed from their authentic selves. FOMO, Highlight Reels

  • Gaming and the developing brain – An oversupply of dopamine leading to dopamine deficiency, synaptic pruning, and the underdevelopment of social skills and empathy

  • Naked Selfies - The pressure to send nudes from intermediate up through high school

  • Online predators - The methods they use, how to spot them, and how to get out from under their control if your child has been trapped

  • Online porn vs healthy sexuality - How consuming online pornography as a child or teen can create a sexual template where violence, aggression, and dominance are seen as normal and consent can become very blurry

Solutions

  • Filters - Which filters are best and how to install them

  • Smartphones - How to lock down a smartphone to make it a safe phone

  • Boundaries - How to put good boundaries in place around device use

  • 3 golden rules - The 3 golden rules that will keep your kids safe

  • Talking to your kids - How to have difficult conversations with your kids

  • Challenging our own phone and device usage - Reconnecting as a family.

We urge you to attend if you are able to, it will be well worth it!

Shave For a Cure - 13th of September

On the 13th of September we are asking children to come to school with some sort of wild and wacky hair.  We are asking them to bring a donation on the day that will go to the Shave For a Cure fund.

Michelle Douglas, Kye, Jackson and Blake all have personal fundraising pages if you want to donate to this great cause, prior to the day.  You can donate to these prior to the day.

I will also be shaving my hair off on the day.  The money donated to me will go to the Cancer Society as part of the incredible fundraising done by the Hikurangi Golf Club on their recent Daffodil Day Fundraiser.  I am hoping to raise $3000 or more to add to their total of $20 000 raised so far.  In the 18 years of this Stableford tournament, the golf club has raised a total of $293,056.

If you have already pledged money, you can now make payment to the school account, if you have not pledged yet, but would like to donate, I would really appreciate that.

Property

The MOE are currently working on a plan to fence the external boundary of the school.  While we know this will change the aesthetic of our place, it will make the frontage of our school much safer, particularly for our new entrants.  We will keep you up to date, but this is likely to happen during the Summer break.

School Photos

School photos are tomorrow.

ANIMAL ENTRIES FOR AG DAY - 20th of October - Get Your Forms In

We will be holding this on the 20th of October, which is the second  Friday back of Term 4.  If your child is wanting to train a calf or a lamb to compete on this day please come in and see Dianne for an entry form.  Animals need to be born after July 1st.  More information about this day will come out closer to the time.

You have until the end of the term to register your animal.

Have a Go - Tennis

Interested in Tennis? Pop along to this free event on the 10th of September 10am - 4pm Kamo Tennis Sports Club.

School Grounds

The school grounds will be closed to the public during the Term 3 holidays as we have a lot of construction going on.  You may have already noticed that some temporary fencing has gone up along the side of the turf, this is to pop the drainage in before the new turf is put in during the holidays.

Fundraisers - Please support us if you can

Halloween Event

Again we will hold it on Halloween which is more fun for our tāmariki Tuesday 31st October.

We will need your help to make this happen!  Please see the sponsorship forms that came home with your child recently.

Instead of jolly jars, we have decided to do a lucky dip, this means no chance of broken jars on the night.  Staff have been purchasing items for sale on the night and we are always grateful for any other donations of small toys  in good condition.  These can be brought along to the school office.

Please can you share our Halloween Fundraising letter with any business or whanau that might be interested in sponsorship for our fundraiser.  You can get a copy of the fundraising letter from the office if you need one.

Website is coming along nicely and hopefully we can soon start to share and sell tickets.

Pizza Lunch

This is open on Kindo now, you can purchase it now.   We had a few families that purchased twice last time, if you are unsure if your order has gone in, go to the right top corner of your Kindo account and click on orders, this will then tell you if you have purchased.  If you do make a mistake when ordering, you need to let us know straight away.

Orders close - 10th September

Pizza served - 13th September

Raffle

Dianne is currently working hard to create a fabulous end of year raffle.  She’d appreciate any donations towards this raffle.  If you know of a business willing to donate items, please let her know.

Food for thought…Rights and Responsibilities

In society we all have rights, but we also have responsibilities, school is no different.   As part of our restorative practice processes we have adopted some rights and responsibilities posters that can be used for discussion when things don’t quite go the way children want them to.  I will share one a week for you to discuss at home with your children.

School News - Week Five

Kaurihohore School Week Five, Term Three 2023

Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.

Respect - Empathy - Kindness

He aroha whakatō, he aroha ka puta mai

“If kindness is sown, then kindness is what you shall receive”

Kia ora e te whānau,

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter.  We know it is often quite long, but we appreciate you taking the time to keep up with what is going on.

What a great cross country event we had today, it was fantastic to see the children giving it their best and embracing challenge.

A massive thanks for all of the baking and to the small team of helpers selling food today, we are super grateful to you!

It is hard to believe we are already at the halfway point of the term, it all goes by so fast and as usual teachers are incredibly busy trying to cover everything that they need to.

We have had a lot of illness in the school recently, with the flu making its way through.  It is hard to see children so unwell and struggling to get back to wellness and we hope that the bugs will make their way out of the gate very soon!

It was excellent to see so many people coming along to the recent learning conferences.  Remember, if you have questions or concerns at any stage, please contact your child’s teacher, the earlier we address issues, the better.

We are the first to acknowledge that we don’t always get things right, that is the reality of the world, we are only human.  However we do always do our best and appreciate you addressing any concerns in a respectful and timely manner.

Thank you all for your support.

Leslee Allen
