Paid Union Meetings – Concerns about proposed changes to funding
The government is currently proposing changes to the way schools are funded. We are all very concerned about the direction this is taking and feel it is important that everyone involved is as informed as they can possibly be.
Principals and teachers are very worried that the proposed global budget will lead to:
- fewer teachers and larger class sizes
- less job security for teachers
- Inexperienced teachers employed over experienced ones as they are more affordable
- lower quality teaching
- fewer hours for teacher aides and support staff
- more complex financial work for Boards of Trustees
Ultimately it will be our children that miss out.
To address these concerns our union has called for paid union meetings. Our union meeting is to be held at 1.30 on Friday September the 16th. These meetings will involve primary and secondary teachers along with principals and support staff.
While it is not our policy to have teacher only days, or to close early on any day other than the very last day of the year, we believe this is a very important issue, similar to the class sizes issue a few years ago it is one we all need to take a collective stance on. Because of this our staff will be attending. To allow us to do this we would appreciate all children picked up early on Friday the 16th of September. We would like children picked up from 12.30pm and they will be supervised in the courtyard until 12.45pm. We understand that this will cause disruption to your day and hope that by telling you early, you will be able to make arrangements for your children.
If you are unable to make arrangements to have your child/ren picked up early please let us know as soon as possible.
