End of Term Wrap Up

Today marks the end of Term 1.  It has been a long, but very productive term!

By the end of today you will receive the first instalment of your child's cumulative report.  This is based on dispositions and gives you an insight into how your child is going at school as a learner.  Please take the time to like or comment on this report so that we know you have read it.

You may have also received updates on your child's writing, maths or reading via seesaw so you can see how they are going academically.  If you have not received this update from your child's teacher, you can expect it next term.

At the end of the report format are the images below.  They give you an idea of where your child is working within the NZ curriculum expectations.  This is not a definitive measure, but one indication of where they are at in the core curriculum areas.  The colour code at the bottom of the diagram indicates what level your child is at and the text on each bar relate to the levels referred to at the top of your child's report.

Interpreting Your Child's Current Stage According to Curriculum Level

You will also note that we have included your child's attendance rate at the top of the comments. Average attendance across our school is 94% so that gives you an idea of where your child's attendance falls. Attendance does have a significant impact on academic and social progress, so ensuring your child is at school when they are not sick is vitally important.

If you have questions or concerns about your child's learning, behaviour or anything that may be causing them a problem, please make a time next term with your child's teacher to sit down and chat about this.

------

Today we celebrate three children from each class who deserve extra recognition for their commitment to our school values and to their learning. We will be giving out these class awards at 2.30pm today on the courts. You are more than welcome to come along and celebrate these learners with us.

We will also be announcing our Term One overall Citizen - Mana Tangata. Someone recognised by the children for the positive contribution they make to our school and the way they display positive leadership for others to aspire to. Our finalists are pictured below:

When we first started our approach to promoting positive leadership in 2006, something we then called the Good Citizen Project we noticed that the leadership roles in the school were being taken by those that were not such positive role models.  Those with behaviour problems were being rewarded too easily for small changes, whilst those children that were consistently good went largely unnoticed.
We wanted to develop a culture that promoted children into visible leadership roles that truly deserved these.  We wanted those that had difficulty with regulating behaviour to want to follow these role models and have to assume positive habits if they were to be given any leadership in classes/school.

We also wanted to have a positive impact on the behaviour of boys and promote boys as leaders as they were consistently overshadowed by their female counterparts and not recognised for the strengths they brought to the table.

Reading back on our original intentions of this approach and looking at how leaders and role models are now recognised by the children, I think we have well and truly achieved our goal. This is no longer an approach, or a project, it is just the way we are.

Today we will also have the lost property out...please check this and take home anything that belongs to your child.  We will have it out on the courts, so if you are coming along to the awards, please have a look then.

--------

We look forward to seeing everyone back for Term 2 on the 3rd of May, it will be a Winter term, so children can wear caps to school if they like, however, these go missing easily, so if they do wear a special cap, name it and let them know they are responsible for it.  Children will also need an extra change of clothes in their bag as the weather gets wetter and our grounds get muddier.
