Kaurihohore School Week Nine, Term Three 2025
"Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua," Let our past guide our future
Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.
Respect - Empathy - Kindness
Kia ora e te whānau,
We are racing towards the end of term, the glimpses of sun have been lovely, here’s hoping we get more of those sunny days to come, the sun certainly makes a big difference to everyone’s mood.
As we reach the end of this term, it means that our preparations for our massive Halloween event really ramp up as it will be the end of October before we know it.
Please visit this document and pop yourself down in an area you can help with. This is a really big event for our school and the more successful we can make it each year, the less we will need to do other fundraising. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, so spread the word.
Pumpkins
If your family has been growing a pumpkin for Halloween, these can be brought along to school on Ag day for judging. They will be put into Room 4 and need to come to school whole. These will then be carved prior to Halloween.
Come Scare With Me
Interested in being a scarer on the day? I would love your help. From 4pm - 5.30pm we will be running ‘kid friendly scaring’ . This is a great time for older children or teenagers to help out who would like to add a bit of atmosphere by dressing up as fairy tale characters or slightly scary characters and interacting with our visitors. From 5.30pm onwards it will be big kid friendly. This is when we will need to bring our ‘expert’ scarers out, the more scarers we can have wandering around adding to the atmosphere, the better the night will be. Please contact me (Leslee) if you would like to join my scaring team and are able to be on scaring duty from 5.30pm - 7.30pm. We are more than happy if our Year 6 children, or past attendees want to join us at this time to add to the scary atmosphere.
Please have a look at what your child’s class has been allocated and get involved. If your class has been allocated baking, you can send this along on the day. If your class has been allocated candy or juice/fizzy, these can be sent along to classes from any time now.
*If you have students from multiple classrooms, please select one class and support them.

Practice At Home - We Need Your Help
As we come to the end of Term 3 we start to reflect on progress that children have made so far over the year and areas that they still really need to work on. One key feature of success is practice. We know that when we feel successful, we are more likely to be motivated to learn more. When we don’t feel successful we become more likely to avoid that task. Practice makes progress. Repeated practice of a skill is vital for us to become fluent with that skill. While we regularly practice at school and try to ensure as many repetitions of skill practice, we can only do so much. Please assist your child by practicing in those areas that your child may be having some difficulty. Areas like spelling, basic facts and reading warrant lots of practice. This practice does not need to be onerous, in fact, short bursts of practice are more beneficial. Pick one thing and work on it for five minutes a day, this will make a huge difference for your child. If you are not sure what your child needs to be practicing at home, please check in with their teacher. I wrote this article recently, that could be very useful in guiding you around what practice can look like and why it is important.
Ned Show - Yo-Yos For Sale
Yesterday the children attended the NED show. This show had a very important message around bouncing back. Resilience is such an important skill to develop and something we notice our children really struggle with. Messages around overcoming challenges are so important as many of our children are inclined to view very small problems as very big ones. They then struggle to bounce back and will hold onto these feelings. This impacts them in so many ways. NED stands for:
Never give up
Encourage others
Do your best
Yo-yos will be on sale until next Tuesday in the morning before school. They range in price from $16 - $25. Funds raised enable other schools to experience this show for free.
Empty Classroom Day - This Friday
Empty classroom day is being held this Friday (weather permitting.) On this day children can bring along items that they wish to use as part of their day. However, please do not allow them to bring devices along to school. Changes of clothes are recommended. We are hoping to have a fire on this day, so children may like to bring along marshmallows to toast. If it is raining, then we will have to go ahead with a normal classroom day.
End Of Term Awards-Next Wednesday 17th September
We will be holding our end of term awards next Wednesday at 2.10pm under the canopy. Please note this is a change for having them on the last day of the term due to a timetable clash. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Places For 2026
If your child will not be returning to our school in 2026, please let us know. This information is important to determine how many places we can offer and how we sort classes for next year.
We currently have new entrants, year 2 and year 4 positions for 2026. If you know of anyone considering changing schools, moving into our area, or enrolling their new entrant they can email kaurienrolments@gmail.com for more information.
If you know of anyone who is in our zone, with a child who will be starting school next year, please make sure they have been in contact. This helps us greatly as it determines how many out of zone places we can offer. Applications close Wednesday the 8th of October.
Ag and Flower Day - 10th October
This will be held in the first week back of next term and it is time to register animals. Please see
Dianne to register your calf, lamb or goat for this day. More information will come home next week about what children need to bring on the day.
Teachers Only Day - 17th of November
We will be holding our Ministry allocated teacher only day on the 17th of November. This day will be used as curriculum development, allowing teachers to discuss where we are at with our knowledge of the new curriculum and what our next steps are for 2026. School will be closed to children on this day.
Fundraising
Our target this year is to raise $40 000 to cover learning support needs. This learning support serves to ensure we have people on the ground outside of classroom teachers that can give our children the support they need, when they need it. Unfortunately this is not currently funded by the Government.

In Term 2 we raised: $13 001.76
