Week One News

Kaurihohore School Week One, Term Four 2025

Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua," Let our past guide our future

Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.

Respect - Empathy - Kindness

Kia ora e te whānau,

Welcome back to school.  Term four is always a busy one and will speed by.  A big welcome to the newest members of our school, we look forward to getting to know you all.

Last term our regular attendance was only 48% (regular attendance is considered 90% which is less than five days absent.)  While we did have a lot of sickness, there was also a lot of absence noted for other reasons.  Of particular concern are regular absences on a Monday and Friday.  Every day of the week is important, please ensure your child is at school regularly unless they are unwell.

You will have no date seen the information around a proposed teacher strike on the 23rd of October.  This date will not be confirmed till the 20th of October as it is dependent on ongoing negotiations. There is however a strong likelihood that it will go ahead.  If it goes ahead our school will be closed for instruction and supervision on this day as the majority of staff are members of the union.

While pay is part of the negotiations, it is actually only a small part of what teachers and principals are asking for.  What we really want is support for those children that need it.  Our system really is at breaking point and we struggle to cope with limited funding and limited support.  We need more adults in classrooms in the form of teacher aides and we need more staffing to be able to provide extra learning support and extension for those that need it.  We hope we have your support with this.

We know that closing school is an imposition and none of us want to go without a day's pay, but at this point we need the government to start listening to us.

Ag and Flower Day - 10th October

Family Challenge - Completely Optional

Optional Creation #1

Create a photo frame, no larger than A5, either up cycle one or create one of your own. It is important that this is the child’s work. Inside we want a photo of your pet, or if you don’t have one a photo of any animal (the child needs to have taken the photo themselves, so they will not be in the photo.)

We can print the photo at school if needed, just let us know.

These will be sent to school by the 9th of October (day before Ag Day) They must be able to be mounted on the wall or displayed standing up, these will be displayed in the nest.

Optional Creation #2

This is a family creation. Create a miniature garden as a family any theme that you choose but please ensure it is miniature (not bigger than 30cmx20cm). The idea is that these are tiny worlds, so keep that in mind.

Children in the senior classes do create their own miniature gardens, but this is your opportunity to have some fun as a family!

These are to be brought along to the nest on Friday morning (10th) and will be displayed on a table. Ensure they are marked in some way with your family name.

Class Items

These Items will be made on the day: Please note, some items require things to be provided.

Room 6 - 10

Aqua Jar Completed at school, bring an appropriate flower to stick to the lid and a clean jar without a label if you have one.  -

Buttonhole - Bring a flower and foliage that are suitable for a

buttonhole

Miniature Garden - Accessories from home will be discussed in class.  Please do not make these at home.

Vaseline saucer

Children will need flowers with good petals for this one.  We will provide the saucer and vaseline

Children need to take this home at the end of the day.

Room 1 - 5

Paper Vase of Flowers  Bring flowers appropriate to stick to paper with long stalks.  They don’t need many and some sort of foliage also works well too.

Class craft - nothing is needed, teachers will provide materials.

Vaseline saucer

Children will need flowers with good petals for this one.  We will provide the saucer and vaseline

Children need to take this home at the end of the day.

 -

The items highlighted in yellow, need to be brought along on the day in a named plastic bag, container or bucket.  If you have extra flowers, you don’t mind sharing, that would be great as some children won’t have any.

Organisation of the day:

9 - 10.30pm - Completion of items  (10.30 judging begins)

10.30 - Ag day animals start to be judged out on the field. Classes will move out to the field to watch.

11.00 - Morning Tea (Ag day animals will continue to be judged at this time.)

11.30 - Rooms available for viewing.  Children view other classes together in class lots.

12.15pm - Lunch time. (Ag day animals will continue to be judged during this time if needed)

1.30pm - Conclusion of lunch.  Children return to class.

Children may go home early, but do not have to, as class will resume as normal.  If you take your child home, please sign them out at the office and let their teacher know.

Teachers Only Day

This will be held on the 17th of November.  This day is allocated for curriculum development.  School will be closed for instruction on this day.

Hats

In Term 1 and 4, the expectation is that all children will wear hats when outside.  Hats must have a full brim or a flap at the back.  We recommend having a school hat that gets left in your child’s bag.  If children do not have a hat, they will have to play in the courtyard area of the school.  Please support us by ensuring your child knows the importance of wearing a hat.

Fundraising

Our target this year is to raise $40 000 to cover learning support needs.  This learning support serves to ensure we have people on the ground outside of classroom teachers that can give our children the support they need, when they need it.  Unfortunately this is not currently funded by the Government.

Total raised in Term 1 was- $5281.20

In Term 2 we raised: $13 001.76

In Term 3  - $9803.80

Total so far - $28 086.76  (Term one two and three)

Term 4 Fundraisers-

Chocolates

We will continue to sell these towards our fundraising target during Term 3 and 4.
