School News Week One - Term Two

Kaurihohore School Week One, Term Two 2025

Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.

Respect - Empathy - Kindness

He aroha whakatō, he aroha ka puta mai

“If kindness is sown, then kindness is what you shall receive”

Kia ora e te whānau,

Welcome back to a new term.  A big welcome to our new families, you are now officially part of our Kaurihohore whānau!

Term two has started wet and our grounds really reflect the recent weather we have had.  We lost a few trees in the storm, along with bark and sand from our playground.   There is certainly a lot of cleaning up to be done.

It is a great idea if children start to wear footwear that is appropriate to the weather we have been having and please ensure they bring a change of clothes.  Our children love being out in the rain, so sending along an umbrella or a raincoat is a good idea.

Looking forward to a very positive Term 2.  As always we appreciate your support.

Working Together To Instill Great Habits

A big part of who we are as a school is based on knowing how the brain learns, but also understanding the stress response and how we can best help children based on their developmental needs.  We have worked hard to base our core understandings on relational neuroscience, understanding the impact of trauma, being developmentally informed, being neurodiversity affirming and understanding the importance of the first few years at school.  We understand that habits like respect, kindness and empathy can only be developed when children feel safe and connected and these habits take time to develop.

We work hard to work together as a staff to best assist all of our children.  We acknowledge that sometimes we may not get it 100% right, but we are always doing our best and constantly learning.

Children are not little adults and they will make many mistakes on their journey, ones that they will need our support with.

It is crucial that we are supporting each other, rather than contradicting one another.  If a teacher comes to you with concerns, please understand that we need your support with these.  If a child sees that you do not value what we have to say, they won’t value the support we are trying to give them.  We may not always completely agree with one another, but it is vital that children see us as a cohesive team that is working together to help them to develop positive habits and if needed, to take accountability for any mistakes they may have made and in turn, learn and grow from these mistakes.  Modelling this as adults is also important, we are not perfect, we make mistakes, we say and do things that we later regret.  Children must see us actively role modelling how we acknowledge, take accountability for and learn from these mistakes.

Moving Post Peelings - Morning Working Bee 13th of May 8am

We still have a massive pile of post peelings to be moved.  Paul will be here on the 13th of May and it would be great if we could get a few people along at 8am with wheelbarrows  and spades to move the rest of this pile.  Just a few adults should be able to move this pile relatively quickly, if you are able to help at all, we would greatly appreciate it!  Masks will be available.  If we don’t get it all moved, we will make another date.  If you are not able to make this date or time but would like to help come in and chat to Dianne and she will put you in contact with Paul.

Police Education visit - Keeping Ourselves Safe - 19th - 23rd May

In week four we have two police education officers working in our school to deliver elements of the Keeping Ourselves Safe programme.  Rooms 1 - 5 will be covering My Body is My Own (physically me, touch)

 Room 6 - 9 will be covering :

*The real world (safe and unsafe behaviours)

*Digital safety (being safe online)

*About abuse (knowing what it is and how to get help)

You can find all resources and overviews by visiting www.police.govt.nz and searching Keeping Ourselves Safe.

You are welcome to chat to your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

Fundraising

Our target this year is to raise $40 000 to cover learning support needs.  This learning support pays to ensure we have people on the ground that can give our children the support they need, when they need it.  Unfortunately this is not currently funded by the Government.

Total raised so far - $5281.20 - thank you so much for your support!

Term 2 Fundraisers-

*Sponsored Colour Run - information has been sent home about this.   This will be held on the 11th of June, all money raised go towards our fantastic support staff.  Information has gone home via seesaw, you can set up a student profile page by going to www.schoolfunrun.co.nz.  You can then share this link via social media and SMS.  If you are given cash, you can also bring this to the office and it will be added to your child’s account.

*Chocolate - chocolates are now available to sell, please pick up the boxes you would like from the school office.  Once sold, please send money back to the office.  This was a great fundraiser for us last year and goes a very long way towards achieving that target.  Again, all money raised goes towards funding for learning support that is not currently funded by the MOE.

*Pizza day fundraisers - the first pizza day is being held on the 7th of May.  You can order via KINDO and orders close on the 3rd of May.

Thank you for your hard work in making these fundraisers successful! We truly appreciate your support.

Week Nine School News

Kaurihohore School Week Nine, Term One 2025

Manaaki te katoa - be kind to all.

Respect - Empathy - Kindness

He aroha whakatō, he aroha ka puta mai

“If kindness is sown, then kindness is what you shall receive”

Kia ora e te whānau,

It was really rewarding to spend a couple of hours outside as a school on Monday, cleaning up the school grounds. Each class had decided on areas they wanted to take ownership for.   It was great for the children to see how their efforts, in such a short time, could make such a great difference.  Going forward we want to keep up this approach, embedding up to 30 minutes in our week where we go out, weed, tidy, plant, whatever it may be, to keep on top of our enormous grounds.  We are really grateful to those that were able to come along and help out, your efforts really assisted us!

We hope this big effort will help children develop a sense of responsibility and ownership for our place as kaitiaki.  In turn, hopefully they will develop more respect for this place that they call home between 9am and 3pm during the week.

We have long been very proud of our Kauri kids, they punch above their weight and this is often seen evidenced in intermediate and high school prize giving. For such a small school, we are very well represented during these times of celebration.  This couldn’t have been more evident than it has been recently with three of our children competing at the Northland Swimming Championship, they were competing against the best 9 year old swimmers in Northland, from Wellsford to Kaitaia.

Belle  1st Place in 25 Breaststroke

Kye 7th Place in 25 Backstroke

Kaley 10th Place in 25 Freestyle

Well done guys.

Another example of this is our EPR08 teams, representing us so well at the heats.  Then  after winning last week's heat, Liam, Levi, Adam and Will represented our school at the EPRO8 Grand final at Whangārei Boys High.  They boys made us proud by coming first equal!

A big thank you to Cathy, the effort you put into these events really is outstanding, our children are very lucky.

Next week is the last week of term, Term 1 has been a very busy one and it has seemed to fly by.  We will see everyone back on the 28th of April for the beginning of Term 2.

A reminder that teacher only day is this Friday.

If you have not returned a form letting us know how many chocolate boxes you would like for our fundraiser next term, please see or message Dianne by tomorrow.  This is a big fundraiser for us and we’d love to sell as many as possible.

Thank you for your support this term, in particular, thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter, I do take a lot of time to ensure it contains information that you need.

Moving Post Peelings

We managed to get through some of this pile on Monday.  If you have any time at all there is still a lot to move.  The post peelings are going along the fenceline between the school and the cemetery, 10-15cm deep on the weed mat and 25-30 cm everywhere else.  Once this area is done, we can top up gardens in the native bush and around the school, like the small gardens in the courtyard.  If moving any of this, please wear a mask, we have some available at the school office.

Junior Sandpit

As some of you will know, a while back we tried to get some traction on creating a junior sandpit, located adjacent to the Matariki garden, currently where the bark pile is.  Unfortunately this never went beyond the design process due to us just having too much on our plates to plan and manage another project.  We would still love to make this area happen and will be looking into ways that we could get this created, but if anyone is keen to take this project on and drive it forward, we would love the help.  The area does not need to be flash, just be connected to the Matariki garden path in some way and provide for the play urges of our children.  If you think you might have the time to work on pulling something together you could touch base with Vikki Tuckey who will be investigating this further.

Attendance

We currently have 74% of our children attending school regularly (90%) of the time.  While this is above the 2024 target that was set, we do have a number of children with very concerning attendance.  Please ensure your child is attending regularly unless they are too unwell to attend.

End Of Term Awards

These will be held at 2.10pm on the last day of term, all welcome to attend.
