Celebrating Outside Play Day

Also known as empty classroom day. 

We all know that outside play is absolutely crucial for children.  Play is a fundamental right of childhood, and should not be seen as frivolous, instead it should be seen as absolutely crucial. 

At Kaurihohore we believe play is a fundamental part of the curriculum and that children should be given ample opportunity to self-direct their own play both inside and outside of the classroom.   Device free.

Not only does play assist all areas of development, but it also assists in social skills and allows children to develop friendships based on common interests.

Children learn to manage risk through play and are able to develop a real sense of self.  Not only that but active play contributes to physical fitness and wellbeing.

On the 30th of November our whole school will be self-directing their play all day long.  Children are welcome to bring tools along on this day or various loose parts that they would like to use as part of their play.  All adults are also welcome to come and join in the play, along with supervised pre-schoolers :)

In Zone Students For 2018/19/20

At the moment we are experiencing quite substantial in zone growth.  For a school our size this can be difficult to manage as we have limited classes to place children in and no other buildings to create classes in.

If you are living in our zone and intend to send your child to our school we would greatly appreciate you getting in touch with us.  If your child will start in 2018, 2019 or 2020 we need to know.  This allows us to plan effectively for the future.

Gala - This Weekend

9am - 1pm.  Main parking in the neighbours paddock just past the school.  White Elephant, plants, food and crafts open at 8.30am. Come along and enjoy a fun family day out!

Athletics Day

ATHLETICS DAY – Wednesday November 15th

Below is the expected schedule of the day.

Our plan is to keep children out of the likely heat of the afternoon, therefore all events will be run prior to lunchtime with children returning to class after lunch. This is not a half day and class will resume as normal after lunch.

9.00am Children will go to class as normal, the roll will be taken. Children will then assemble on the court. The children will be grouped in their year levels.
9.15am start
First four events will run.
Approximate time of morning tea is 10.30 (However this is dependent on the length of time each event takes.)
10.30 – 11.10 – Morning Tea
Following morning tea the final 3 events will run.

Please note these times are approximate.

Lunchtime approximately 12.45

Children will need to come along in appropriate clothing to run and jump in. They will also need their hat, sunscreen and water. A jumper is also a good idea just in case it is cold. It would be wonderful to see as many adults as possible wearing hats as well.
Events on this day will include shot put, discus, high jump, hurdles, sprints and fun relays. The emphasis of this day is for the children to have fun through competition.

If it is wet the event will be cancelled, a decision will be made by 8.30am. There is a chance that the junior section of the day will be cancelled and the Senior events run later in the day if it fines up...you will be advised of this on our blog page or facebook page if this happens.

No food for sale this year.

Gala Helpers

Our gala is coming up on the 18th of November from 9am-1pm.  Thank you to all of those people able to help on the day.  This is the helpers list so you can make sure you get the right time and know where you are helping.


Please turn up slightly earlier than the time slot given and let others know you are there to help out. 

Enrolments For 2018

Out of zone positions have been advertised, balloted and allocated now.  There were no out of zone positions for children beyond siblings of children already in the school.  We had nine applications over and above what we had available, so the ballot was held on the 25th of October and overseen by a member of the Police Force.  People who did apply have been notified with the position that their child's name was pulled out in the ballot.  This will form the waiting list for 2018.

We have no positions for other year levels in the school and the best we can offer is a place on the waiting list.

If you are in our zone and have a child who will be attending our school in the next three years we really need to know this.  Our roll is a constant balancing act and the more information we have to predict our roll, the better placed we are to know how many out of zone positions we can offer.  This then directly affects our class sizes which we try to keep as small as possible.

Unfortunately if you are out of zone, even if it is only by a short distance, you are still out of zone and we must treat everyone equally according to our enrolment policy.

Home Zone

All students who live within the home zone described below shall be eligible to enrol at the school.

Starting at the intersection of Jordan Valley Rd and Rushbrooke Rd. Southeast along Jordan Valley Rd (124/125 and above included). Apotu Rd to SH1. SH1 as far as Piano Hill Rd (included). Salesyard Rd and Vinegar Hill Rd to Riversong Rd (included). West across country 9 Woodland Rd included) to cross SH1 at the Great North Rd intersection. West to meet Crane Rd/Pipiwai Rd intersection (Pipiwai Rd and Parakiore Rd excluded). North along Crane Rd to Apotu Rd.

All residential address on included sides of boundary roads and all no exit roads off included sides of boundary roads are included in the zone unless otherwise stated.
